The Ballad of Lovejoy - The Comet that Could

www.thesuntoday.org - On December 2, 2011, Astronomer Terry Lovejoy discovered a Kreutz or sungrazing comet using a ground based telescope. The comet was labeled C W3 or simply Lovejoy. It was then seen by STEREO (Behind 12/11 then Ahead 12/12) with the Heliospheric Imagers (HI1). It was reported by SOHO and NRL (Karl Battams). Karl has kept up a great running story with tons of details at sungrazer.nrl.navy.mil. SOHO LASCO C3 starting seeing Lovejoy on 12 By that time there was a lot of excitement. Lovejoy was determined to be quite large for a sungrazer (10 times most) with an estimated size of 100+ meters. All this indicated that this would be the brightest such comet seen from space but it was also only the second one seen from the ground. This also means that Terry Lovejoy is the first person to find a Kreutz comet from the ground and space! After SOHO, the STEREO coronagraphs started observing Lovejoy. The orbit has been plotted and since SDO had already seen a sungrazer in EUV light it was time to prepare to see another one. Also, PROBA2 and Hinode started making plans. But the other exciting bit was that the predicted orbit had Lovejoy going around the Sun and with its size there was the chance it would not evaporate in the solar corona. Most people didn't think it would survive but nobody really knew. Well to get to the point - It survived! I haven't felt such excitement in a long time. Seeing grown scientists giddy (including myself) was great! The whole event ...

"ISS030-E-014406 (21 Dec. 2011) --- Comet Lovejoy is visible near Earth's horizon in this nighttime image photographed by NASA astronaut Dan Burbank, Expedition 30 commander, onboard the International Space Station on Dec. 21, 2011" "Today Burbank described seeing the comet as "the most amazing thing I have ever seen in space," in an interview with WDIV-TV in Detroit. Burbank took hundreds of still images of the comet." www.physorg.com (thanks to youtuber calmkitty for informing me about this!)
Sundiving Comet Lovejoy Survived its Close Encounter with the Sun (Dec 16th, 2011)..

COMET LOVEJOY SURVIVES: Incredibly, sungrazing Comet Lovejoy appears to have survived its close encounter with the sun. Lovejoy flew only 140000 km over the stellar surface during the early hours of Dec. 16th. spaceweather.com

'Christmas Comet' Lovejoy's Tail Now Visible Before Sunrise - Dec. 23 2011

"Clearly visible in the sky, it was expected to be vaporised by the sun but miraculously popped out the other side after passing through its corona. It missed the sun by only 200000 kilometres which might sound a lot but temperatures in its path are around 1.5 million degrees Celsius. The extreme heat explains Lovejoy's long tail: its ice melting and shedding off bits of dust behind it. The comet was discovered by Australian Terry Lovejoy at the beginning of the month and is thought to be about half a kilometre wide. The comet should be visible over the next few days, if you look to the east around 3.30am." www.3news.co.nz • ˚ •˛•˚ * 。 • ˚ ˚ ˛ ˚ ˛ • • ˚Happy★* 。 • ˚ ˚ ˛ ˚ ˛ • •。★Holidays!★ 。* • ˚。 ° 。 ° ˛˚˛ * _Π_____*。*˚ ˚ ˛ •˛•˚ */______/~\。˚ ˚ ˛ ˚˛ •˛• ˚ | 田田|門| ˚

12/25/2011 -- Comet lovejoy (C/2011 W3) breaking up or interacting with something near Venus

update 12/25/2011 325pm CST: I removed the 2nd lovejoy video.. here are the facts.. the feed was changed to be every 2 hours some time today.. the feed earlier today was every 40 minutes.. the IMAGES from every 40 minutes are available still .. the video is gone. Why? I don't know yet. but the images are still available , just not the video. You can find the images by searching for "images" on the left hand side.. its fairly complex to navigate but they are still there for the time being. In otherwords.. it is a case of omission of data as opposed to censorship of data -- you can make you "own movie" by downloading all the pics and streaming them together in a slideshow on your own movie maker. (real hassle to do) Seen with the most current view on the SECCHI website: select the SECCHI B - HI1 -- search the last 4-5 days (20111219) here is the site: secchi.nrl.navy.mil

Comet Lovejoy's New Tail: Update!

At first the emerging comet was missing its tail. This might have been a trick of geometry: The comet's tail was pointing away from Earth, temporarily invisible due to foreshortening. On the other hand, the absence might have been genuine. The comet's store of surface volatile materials could have been "baked-out" by the fiery transit, leaving the nucleus unable to mount substantial jets of gas and dust. Newly-arriving SOHO images show the tail is reforming. Small cool comet named "Lovejoy" sundiving toward a giant hot sun, almost no chance of the comet surviving the encounter, but yet love and joy prevailed amazingly in the right proportions...An understanding one may need as the world plunges into 2012...What a wonderful sign to end the year...Merry Christmas...Peace! There could be more surprises in store for this unpredictable comet. Stay tuned for updates. Explanation Credit: DrKstrong www.youtube.com

The End of Comet Lovejoy - Live on the NASA SDO Website

As Comet Lovejoy moves toward perihelion this evening we will point SDO a little to the left of the Sun to try and see the tail of the comet in our telescopes. This website will allow you to see those images and flip through them looking for the comet. sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov Select a wavelength on the right and a new window will open with the images available for that wavelength. The Sun will be on the right side of the window. The comet should move from the lower left corner and go behind the Sun a little above the equator. Images from SDO are available soon after they are observed, but it takes about 30 minutes to move from the spacecraft to our computer at Goddard. We plan to off-point at 23:30 UTC (6:30 pm ET) and return to normal solar observing at 12/16 00:30 UTC (7:30 pm ET). We should see images starting by 7 pm ET. 12/25/2011 -- Comet LoveJoy (C/2011 W3) TWO PIECES -- also the absent feed has been restored !

Any debate as to whether comet LoveJoy is one or two pieces is now settled by the most recent frames of the SECCHI B - HI1 camera footage. The feed that was "missing" earlier today (which actually ended up being available for download in PICTURE form only for half the day today) === HAS NOW BEEN RESTORED ! here is the same link same everything I provided earlier : search the date 20111219 through most current today. Now it is no longer at two hour intervals, but back at 40 minute intervals .. which means you can still see what I was talking about earlier today.. link to the first video I made today on the subject .. where I proposed the notion it was breaking up or intersecting something (like an asteroid maybe) : www.youtube.com link to SECCHI --- again.. search 20111219 until most current -- secchi.nrl.navy.mil

International Space Station Commander Dan Burbank captured spectacular imagery of Comet Lovejoy from about 240 miles above the Earth's horizon on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Burbank described seeing the comet two nights ago as "the most amazing thing I have ever seen in space," but did he capture something else. I concede that the object at the very far right of the screen may be a light flare from the interior of the space station, but the other objects circled, in my opinion are not meteors or debris, and remain unidentified.
