Lully - Te Deum

"Lully is the 17th century French composer who suffered Death by Conducting, when he accidentally (and no doubt painfully) stabbed his toe with his conducting stick and contracted nothing less than a fatal dose of gangrene. He had been directing 150 musicians on 8 January 1687 in a performance of this Te Deum when this very unfortunate footnote in his 55-year life occured." Chia Han-Leon

Baroque Dance - Passacaille from Armide (L'Abbé, Lully)

A performance of Anthony L'Abbé's solo Passacaille to music by Jean-Baptiste Lully from the tragédie en musique "Armide". This solo choreography was published in Beauchamp-Feuillet dance notation in 1711 by Edmund Pemberton, and was adapted from an earlier (c.1706) Passacaille for two women that is also extant in notation. Here it has been reconstructed by Philippa Waite with reference to dancing manuals from the first half of the 18th century. The musicians in this performance are: Andrew Wilson-Dickson - Director/Harpsichord Emma Harrhy - Baroque cello Sophia McKenna - Baroque oboe Barry d'Souza - Baroque violin Gillian Stevens - Viola da gamba Philippa's costume is after a design for a female dancer from the studio of Jean Berain, c.1685. He composed some music for the Ballet de la nuit, which pleased the king immensely. He was appointed as the composer of instrumental music to the king, conducting twenty-four violins of the Grande Bande (large band). He tired of the lack of discipline of the Grande Bande and, with the King's permission, formed his own Petits Violons. Lully composed many ballets for the King during the 1650s and 1660s, in which the King and Lully himself danced. He also had tremendous success composing the music for the comedies of Molière, including Le Mariage forcé (1664 ...

Cadmus et Hermione, opéra de Jean-Baptiste Lully (prologue)

- Opéra (2008 - 2h) réalisé par Martin Fraudreau . Solistes, danseurs, choeur et orchestre du Poème Harmonique. Avec André Morsch : Cadmus - Claire Lefiliâtre : Hermione - Isabelle Druet : Charite, Melisse - Camille Poul : Amour, Pales - Arnaud Marzorati : Arbas, Pan - Jean-François Lombard : Nourrice, Echion. Vincent Dumestre : direction musicale Benjamin Lazar : mise en scène. - Cadmus et Hermione is a tragédie en musique in a prologue and five acts by Jean-Baptiste Lully. The French-language libretto is by Philippe Quinault, after Ovids Metamorphoses. It was first performed on April 27, 1673, at the Paris Jeu de Béquet. The prologue, in praise of King Louis XIV, represents him as Apollo slaying the Python of Delphi. The opera itself concerns the love story of Cadmus, legendary founder and king of Thebes, Greece, and Hermione (Harmonia), daughter of Venus and Mars. Other characters include Pallas Athene, Cupid, Juno, and Jupiter. With Cadmus et Hermione, Lully invented the form of the tragédie en musique (also known as tragédie lyrique). From contemporary Venetian opera, Lully incorporated elements of comedy among the servants, elements which he would later avoid, as would subsequent reformers in Italian opera. A contemporary transcription of the overture by Jean-Henri dAnglebert remains a possible part of the harpsichord repertoire. In early 2008, the French ensemble Le Poème Harmonique staged a performance of the opera in Paris and Rouen, among other places.

From 1664 collaborated with Molière in series of comedy-ballets which were forerunners of French opera, the last and most famous being Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, in which Lully danced role of the Mufti. He was known to be a libertine. In 1661, in letters of naturalization and in his marriage contract to Madeleine Lambert, daughter of Lully's friend and fellow musician Michel Lambert, Giovanni Battista Lulli declared himself as Jean-Baptiste de Lully, escuyer' son of 'Laurent de Lully, gentilhomme Florentin. Although his life is full of meteoric heights, his love affairs with men and women also brought him down in scandal several times at the great displeasure of Louis XIV. Despite these scandals, he always managed to get back into the good graces of Louis XIV who found Lully essential for his musical entertainments and who thought of Lully as one of his few true friends. Having assimilated both Italian and French styles and tastes, from 1673 he turned to opera composition and obtained from the King exclusive rights to arrange operatic performances in Paris. Jean-Baptiste Lully : Les Folies d'Espagne

Lully-Arte-Documentaire 5/10

Jean-Baptiste de Lully (1632-1687) Lully was born in Florence, Italy. Lully had little education, musical or otherwise, but he had a very natural talent to play the guitar and violin and to dance. In 1646, he was discovered by Roger de Lorraine, the chevalier de Guise, son of Charles, Duke of Guise, and taken to France by him, where he entered the services of Mademoiselle de Montpensier (la Grande Mademoiselle) as a scullery-boy and Italian-language teacher. With the help of this princess, his musical talents were cultivated. He studied the theory of music under Nicolas Métru. It has been said that a scurrilous song on his patroness (the doggerel he set to music refers to a "sigh" she produced while at stool) resulted in his dismissal. It is far more likely that he did not want to moulder out in the provinces with the exiled princess.[citation needed] He came into Louis XIV's service in late 1652, early 1653 as a dancer.
