Duo 4500-year-old reproduction lyre & pipes

This is a duet between the reconstructed lyre of ur and some reconstructed silver pipes found in the same grave. Although the lyre strings didn't survive the intervening years, we can reconstruct a musical scale from the position of the holes in the pipes. The original lyre and pipes were excavated by Sir Leonard Woolley at Ur, Mesopotamia. They were deposited in museums at Baghdad and Philadelphia. The replica of the Lyre was made by Andy Lowings and friends. The Silver pipes were evaluated and made by Bo Lawergren. I made this video to support the Lyre of Ur project at www.lyre-of-ur.com You can see a much higher-quality version at http

Improvisation on Norwegian Lyre - Viking instrument - Original

EDIT: Lulz, over 9000 views. This is me, improvising on a traditional norwegian lyre! I borrowed it from my music teacher because I was supposed to play it on a folk concert this weekend (the concert went really good, by the way, hope I can find and upload some material from it). This is something like my 3rd day plying it, so don't be surprized that I make some mistakes! The first seconds are inspired by a Harald Foss-tune, the rest is pure improvisation. It's tuned in G mixolydian, and is based on an old lyre found on the farm Kravik. It's supposed to be from the 1400's, but the lyre has been played at least since 1200-1300. This lyre is made in the north-european style, and is often called rundlyre (Round lyre)

Ancient Greek Music - "First Delphic Hymn to Apollo"c.138BC

This is my 1st (somewhat shakey!) attempt at playing on replica lyre, the famous "First Delphic Hymn to Apollo" - a precious surviving fragment of music, which is an amazing legacy from the mostly lost musical culture of ancient Greece! In this upload, I attempted to use ancient Greek cyclical tuning to TRY and achieve "Just Tuning"...with not very good results! I couldn't get the 3rds to sound "right" :o( There are two Delphic Hymns that have been discovered, and they were dedicated to the god Apollo. Unlike the famous "Song of Seikilos" (the first COMPLETE piece of music that has been so far found to have survived from antiquity), the two Delphic Hymns have sadly not survived in their complete form. However, they do survive in substantial fragments...giving just a tantilizing taste of the glory of the tragically lost, magnificant musical culture of ancient Greece! The two Delphic Hymns are dated c.138 BC and 128 BC. My rendition here, is of the earlier of them; the First Delphic Hymn. Although it has unfortunately not survived in its complete form, the First Delphic Hymn to Apollo is THE earliest unambiguous surviving fragment of notated music from ANYWHERE in the Western World! It is written in the ALPHABETICAL musical notation system used in ancient Greece, whereby alphabetical notation describing the pitch of the melody, is written above the text of the song, as can be clearly seen in this image of the actual Delphic Hymn, as it was found, inscribed in marble: www ...

Making an Anglo-Saxon Lyre part 1

The first batch of my lyre kits have been sent out, and should be arrived shortly. This is the first part of the series and is the one with the most work to do, somehow I managed to get the video edited down to 10 minutes! It was filmed mostly outside to get the best light, but it was freezing and you can just about see the snow that was falling around me at the end. please feel free to ask questions if I have glossed over anything, I do do so many things unconsciously that its hard to pin down some processes. The planing of the top is one example, I plane the wood very close to final dimensions, making the wood as thin as i can without loss of strength, but I have to add a mm when talking about it or people will end up right through the top at a handstroke!! Note:This video series is to accompany the written notes in the Kit, but will also serve to aid anyone making one from scratch, or following my Lyre CD-rom. The series will be released out of sequence over the next few weeks but eventually will end up on someones playlist in order: Making an Anglo-Saxon Lyre from a Kit part 1: Planing the soundboard Part 2: Gluing the top Part 3: Trimming the overhang Part 4: Sanding and final shaping Part 5: Varnishing Part 6: Setting up the Lyre: tuning pins and tailpiece Part 7: Setting up the lyre: bridge and strings Disclaimer: Always follow safe practices while working with tools. Nick Cave - Abattoir Blues - Lyre of Orpheus

My tribute to the photography of Andre Kertesz, Josef Koudelka, Elliott Erwitt, Saul Leiter and Leonard Neumann. I have altered the images digitally into my own style and mixed/produced the video, however the original copyright belongs to the owners (material is in public domain). Cheerz, Sinbadovic. About Nick Cave (edited from Wikipedia): Nick Cave had fronted the group The Birthday Party in the early 1980s, a band renowned for its highly dark, challenging lyrics and violent sound influenced by free jazz, blues, and post-punk. In 2006, he formed the garage rock band Grinderman that released its debut the following year. Their repertoire consisted of proto-punk cover versions of songs by Lou Reed, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Roxy Music and Alex Harvey. n early fan was German director Wim Wenders, who lists him, along with Lou Reed and Portishead among his favorites.[6] Two of Cave's songs were featured in his 1987 film Wings of Desire. ick Cave has also played with Shane MacGowan, in a cover version of Bob Dylan's "Death is Not the End", and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World". Cave has also performed "What a Wonderful World" live with The Flaming Lips. Cave recorded a cover version of the Pogues song "Rainy Night in Soho", written by MacGowan. Pulp's single "Bad Cover Version" includes on its B-side a cover version by Cave of that band's song "Disco 2000". On the Deluxe Edition of Pulp's Different Class another take of this cover can be found. Johnny Cash, covered ...

"King David's Lyre; Echoes of Ancient Israel" (1 of 3)

This video features clips from several of the tracks from my debut album, "King David's Lyre; Echoes of Ancient Israel".. This totally unique, enchanting, meditative and spiritually and uplifting album, consists of an amazing selection of ancient traditional Jewish songs, mystical Shabbat melodies and exhilarating Jewish Klezmer music, all arranged and performed on my replica of the Lyre of the Ancient Hebrews... This amazing Biblical Lyre is known in Hebrew as the "Kinnor" - the Lyre once played by King David himself, 3000 years ago, as he danced before the Ark of the Covenant; and later, during the actual time of Jesus, the Kinnor was played by my very own, very ancient Levite ancestors over 2000 years ago, to accompany the almost legendary singing of the Levitical Choir in the Temple of Jerusalem... According to the writings of the 1st century Jewish Historian, Josephus Flavius, who actually witnessed the Levites play their Kinnors in the Temple of Jerusalem, the Kinnor had 10 strings, made of sheep gut. This video features clips of "The Music of Moses" (an improvisation on a 3500 ancient Egyptian scale!), "Odessa Bulgar", "Avinu Malcheinu" (Our Father, Our King) & "Shalom Aleichem" (Peace be Upon You)... My Albums of Ancient Lyre Music are available, anywhere in the world, from iTunes: itunes.apple.com They are also available from Amazon MP3 Store: amzn.to Also, my 3 CD albums, "King David's Lyre; Echoes of Ancient Israel", "An Ancient Lyre" & "Lyre of the Levites ...

The Ancient Greek Lyre...LIVE!

Lament of Simonides (Ancient Greek Musical Fragment - Arranged For Replica Kithara) - from my album, "The Ancient Greek Lyre", available now, from iTunes: bit.ly This lovely melody, written in the ancient Greek Hypophrygian Mode, can possibly be attributed to the ancient Greek poet & musician, Simonedes of Ceo .Simonides of Ceos (ca. 556 BC-469 BC) was a Greek lyric poet. He was born at Loulis on Kea. During his youth he taught poetry and music, and composed paeans for the festivals of Apollo. He was included, along with Sappho and Pindar, in the canonical list of nine lyric poets by the scholars of Hellenistic Alexandria. Further details can be found at: www.mlahanas.de Although initially the piece sounds as if it is in the Ancient Greek Mixolydian Mode (the equivalent BB on the white notes of the piano - not to be confused with the Medieval "Mixolydian" Mode, which is GG!), the tonality of the melody actually implies the Ancient Greek Hypophrygian Mode (GG). Maybe it is this ambiguity of tonality which creates the haunting, mystical feel of this beautiful ancient melody?

Epic of Gilgamesh with 4500-year-old Lyre (extract)

A performance of part of the Epic of Gilgamesh. This piece uses the newly-reconstructed and completed Lyre of Ur, which was found in a grave in ancient Mesopotamia. The original instrument was destroyed when the Baghdad museum was looted, and this reconstruction uses original materials - gut strings, pink sandstone, lapis lazuli, gold. The string tuning is based on pipes which were found in the same grave, and which appear in another video extract which we'll upload shortly. Andy Lowings reconstructed the Lyre with the help of an international team, and the extract you see here is performed by Bill Taylor and Jennifer Sturdy - Jennifer wears a headress and jewellery based on contemporary designs, also trimmed with gold. You can find out more about the music and the tunings of the lyre here: www.lyre-of-ur.com This video is a taste of a series of music, dance and performance being written especially for this instrument, which is gaining great interest in the academic and music world. If you are interested in having the team bring along this stunning instrument and perform for your organisation, please call Andy Lowings on +44 7709 268426 or in the UK, 07709 268426, and he will be happy to talk to you. I made this video as part of my own contribution to the project. I used Neumann mics into a Soundcraft mixer, with Sony widescreen video cameras, and edited it on Adobe Premiere pro. I hope you enjoy the video! Higher quality version: www.danceofdelight.com

HARP AND LYRE- GRIZZLY ADAMS DID HAVE A BEARD + LYRICS IN DESCRIPTION

i do not own or claim the music, just supporting it. LYRICS: Yes, we all fall short, that's no excuse to live that low. Men won't succeed with their eyes blind, hands tied. Wet cement meets the scorching sun, but it's okay because you've been filing your teeth for weeks. You'll be fine, so you say, you say, since you've been carrying all this weight. I reached out my hand for help, you pushed me away. With a sinister stare he fell to the floor, and formed to his natural state, preyed on the man with the gun in his right, life in his left. As the coward composed his piece tonight, lock jawed and frail, the audience felt, a need to adhere to his towering lecture. Save us. Are these the men that are exploiting you? Slandering the name of the Lord which we belong? Oh, the disguise we portray we become. This is the calling of the bears! Big shoulders won't stand a chance to a boy that's been fed by the King
