This is the camera that you can refocus (and do other things) after you take the image. Why? Because it doesn't capture images the way a regular camera does. It captures the entire light field. Here Lytro's Director of Photography, Eric Cheng, gives me a chance to be one of the first to try it out. I shot about 300 images on a walk around Half Moon Bay and here's the results.

Here at CES in Las Vegas, we were lucky enough to be awarded with a few hours of playtime with the Lytro camera at the Wynn Garden Lobby. For those of you unfamiliar with this peculiar weapon of the digital imaging persuasion, the Lytro camera's specialty is that it can capture images without the need to focus. It turns out that LYTRO has been aware of my rants but could not say anything to correct me until the camera came out. They were kind enough to sit down with me even after I called their technology an APP. Eric Cheng schooled me in all things lytro as you will see in the video above. He has been using the camera for almost a year before it officially came out. It is pretty fascinating when you hear and see everything that goes into bringing a lytro image to life. All I can say is I was humbled by what I was told and what I saw. The future holds some very interesting things for this newly released technology. Just received my LYTRO light field camera today via UPS. Really excited to open the box so I thought I'd share! It's the first camera (outside of an R&D lab) to capture the whole light field. You compose and capture the image, and then focus the image after the fact. You can output traditional stills or post dynamic digital images that allow the viewer to play with depth of field and focus. Really cool technology!
