Daimler's most luxury automotive brand was responsible for just 200 units sold in all of 2009. It is for this reason that rumors have repeatedly surfaced that the Maybach brand is up for sale. Most recently, Chinese automaker BYD was alleged to have made a bid to purchase Maybach, although this was denied by a Daimler spokesperson. All signs point to either a massive overhaul, a shutdown, or a sale of Maybach. Unfortunately, the facelifted models do not dissuade us from this thought. There simply is not enough that has been done differently on the new vehicles to make us believe they will suddenly see a spike in sales of the car.

This is the first post-rebuild engine test of a 1400 cubic inch Maybach V-12 that spent 45 years submerged in a Polish river. After further testing this engine will be re-installed in the same Panther tank it was submerged inside of. Engine restoration crew: Jacques Littlefield, Greg Taylor, Bill Nahmens, Keith Boles, Dave Marian and Jason Pietz. Arnold Chaves of Dos Palmas Machine rebuilt the cylinder heads and provided technical assistance throughout the rebuild. Original camshafts re-ground by Spiro of Hot Rod Cams. The crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons were reconditioned by Babbitt Bearing. Carburetor bodies, floats and misc. parts supplied by Michael Gibb of the SDKFZ foundation. Special fittings, fasteners and fixtures created by Greg Matonis of Matonis Tool and Engineering. Crankshaft roller bearings reconditioned by Bearings Manufacturing Company. All gaskets laser cut by Advanced Laser and Water jet cutting. Carburetors wet flow tested at Ace Fuel Systems. This engine is part of the collection of the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation. Maybach 57s Coupé by Xenatec - A custom car body manufacturer in Weinsberg, Germany, has developed a new coupe body for the Maybach limousine that looks nothing like the Maybach Exelero concept. The Xenatec Group will produce their version in a loose partnership with Daimler, limiting the series to just 100 units. The Maybach 57s coupe will use the same 603-horsepower (450 kW, 612 PS) twin-turbo V12 as the normal Maybach models. Also remaining untouched is the 3.39-meter-long wheelbase, two-tone exterior options, and the highly-customizable four-seat interior.

You might think that linking the words "sporty" and "Maybach" creates the ultimate automotive oxymoron, but a sporty Maybach is exactly what American buyers--who account for 50 percent of the car's world market--want, the automaker says. It's not as if the regular Maybach is mechanically underendowed, but the 57S (for Spezial) is positively John Holmes-ian. Its 6.0-liter, twin-turbo V-12 makes 603 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, versus 543 hp and 664 lb-ft for the stock 57, enough to spear this 6000-pound behemoth from 0 to 62 mph in 5.0 seconds and on to a top speed of 171 mph. Maybach also retuned the air suspension, lowered the ride height by 0.6 inch, and fitted thicker antiroll bars and twenty-inch wheels. Cosmetic changes include a revised grille and rear bumper plus unique monotone black or silver paint schemes. The cabin gets made over, too, with available piano black trim and even more gorgeous leather. The 57S drives remarkably well, although its considerable mass eventually overpowers the outside tires when cornering, even with the air springs in the sportiest setting. The road-crushing ride is unperturbed by the stiffer suspension, and the lack of noise from the 275 Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s is amazing. We still don't quite get the Maybach, though. If you want to flaunt your wealth, the Rolls-Royce Phantom does it better: about 2000 have been sold worldwide, compared with 1500 Maybachs. The 57S is better <b>...</b>
