A new challenge arose from the clouds of the youtube community: Can you shoot a machete with a slingshot? Now a machete is a very heavy weapon, and strong rubber plus a very long draw was called for. This had to be a slingshot crossbow because the rubber had to be so strong that you can not draw it out with one hand. Also the danger of hitting your hand had to be considered. The result is actually pretty impressive: The weapon sent the machete all the way up to the hilt into six layers of very thick cardboard. Try to do that by throwing a machete! No way. Machetes come in all shapes and sizes and can be very specialized tools. In the bush, where I have to clear trail, clear camp, harvest and shape natural materials, as well as prepare foods, cut water vines and clean game, (just to name a few) I like a machete that is a jack of all trades. By making a few simple modifications to the blade I get a variety of edge types located in the right places to optimize their usefulness and application to a wide range of tasks. This is what I call a "Bushcraft Machete". It is a machete that is not just the right choice for one task but rather a blade that finds it's way into just about everything I do in the bush. This video covers some of the uses and applications of the scandi edge I place at the base of my blade as well as the squared spine I use for making shavings. These various edges have wider application than what is shown in the video. If you would like to put some of these mods on your machete then feel free. I even have a tutorial up that shows you how with simple hand tools. Their application, or how you use them is up to you. If your machete is intended exclusively for clearing land or cutting trail then I recommend a full length convex. If your machete is much longer than 16 inches you will probably find using the scandi base awkward. For a bushcraft machete that will ride on your belt and touch on everything you do in the tropics this size blade with these mods has been working moe for many years. Machete (Danny Trejo) is a renegade former "Mexican Federale". He roams the cities, towns, and streets of Texas looking for work after a shakedown from a drug lord called Torrez (Steven Segal). Machete has a run-in with Michael Benz (Jeff Fahey), a local businessman and spin doctor, who tells Machete that McLaughlin (Robert De Niro), a corrupt senator, is sending hundreds of illegal immigrants out of the country and that he must be killed. Benz offers Machete $150000 to kill McLaughlin who quickly accepts the murder contract out of greed for the money. Attempting to assassinate the senator at a political rally, Machete is double-crossed and is shot in the shoulder by Benz's henchmen whom are soon revealed to be in league with Senator McLaughlin who orchestrated the entire attempted assassination with Benz as part of a false flag operation to gain widespread public support for McLaughlin's harsh anti-immigration laws by setting up Machete as the patsy to make it appear that an outlaw illegal Mexican immigrant tried to assassinate the senator. Now on the run from the law and being tracked not only by a ruthless henchwoman hired by Torrez, but Machete is also tracked down by Sartana (Jessica Alba), a persistant US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent with a special interest in the blade slinger. A few years ago I realized that I hated new machetes and much preferred my old worn out ones. I sat down and took a good hard look at my blades to figure out why and discovered that I had been transforming the blades to have a high, flat, sharp edge at the base and a robust convex forward of that. I also had squared off the spine of the machete to make tinder shavings and rounded off the forward portion of the spine because it was tearing up my hand. Ever since I started modifying my machetes to that configuration from the start I never looked back. This is the process I put my new machetes through, feel free to use it if you think it would work for you. Just remember where you got it. A little over a year ago I posted my first machete modification video. Since then I have had numerous requests as to how I put the modifications on the blades and how I sharpen a machete. The first part of this two part video shows how to take a new Tramontina 16 inch machete and do the basic file work necessary to put a scandi edge at the base of the blade, convex the forward portion, and create both square and round sections on the spine. The only tools needed for these mods are a large single cut mill file, two "C" clamps, sandpaper and a work bench. Of course the actual process takes much longer than the video, | eliminated much of the repetitive filing from the video but left in all the steps of the process. The handle is bakelite and the blade is made of carbon steel. They can be used as a grappling hook, machete, wood chopper, bone cutter, digging tool, trig calculator, protractor, measuring device, saw, leather awl-and the most deadly of applications-as a slasher weapon by an operator trained in Systema, or the System. It's sort of like a Woodsman's Pal, or a Tom Brown Tracker survival knife. The hollow handle could be used to store emergency items like a fishing kit, matches, a compass, needles, water purification tablets, a lighter, paracord and whatever else you might need in a survival situation. This former USSR Military knife was only issued to the elite Spetznaz and Soviet Air Force Pilots. It is a very hefty knife and as heavy as some machetes.
