The move, on December 13th 1981, was a last-ditch attempt by the communist authorities to stem the tide of democracy in Poland. Our correspondents bring you the story. On Tuesday, thousands of Poles took part in a march in Warsaw to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the imposition of martial law on December 13th, 1981. [Zygmunt Zurawski, Demonstrator]: "The 13th of December is the 30th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law." Demonstrators carried flags and banners and assembled to hear speeches at a monument near the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. [Zygmunt Zurawski, Demonstrator]: "That man in the picture wearing dark glasses declared martial law 30 years ago in order to destroy the Solidarity movement." Thirty years ago today, General Wojciech Jaruzelski took the decision to imprison key democracy activists and send the army into the streets to suppress opposition to the communist regime. One of the more dramatic events of that period was the firing upon and killing of 9 striking workers by security forces several days after the start of martial law.
