Harold MacMillan (1894-1986)
Maurice Harold Macmillan, 1st Earl of Stockton, OM, PC (10th February 1894 - 29th December 1986) was a British Conservative politician and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 10th January 1957 to 18th October 1963. Nicknamed 'Supermac' and known for his pragmatism, wit and unflappability, Macmillan achieved notoriety before the Second World War as a Tory radical and critic of appeasement. Rising to high office as a protegé of wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill, he believed in the essential decency of the post-war settlement and the necessity of a mixed economy, and in his premiership pursued corporatist policies to develop the domestic market as the engine of growth. As a One Nation Tory of the Disraelian tradition, haunted by memories of the Great Depression, he championed a Keynesian strategy of public investment to maintain demand, winning a second term in 1959 on an electioneering budget. Benefiting from favourable international conditions, he presided over an age of affluence, marked by low unemployment and high if uneven growth. In his immortal Bedford speech of July 1957 he correctly told the nation they had 'never had it so good', but warned of the dangers of inflation, summing up the fragile prosperity of the 1950s. Tim Macmillan - Early Work 1980 - 1994
The Time-Slice camera was first devised in 1980 by Tim Macmillan at Bath Academy of Art during his BA. Fine Arts degree course. Originally a painter, Macmillan was interested in combining Cubist theory with contemporary technology. Initially using hand-made photographic emulsions and photo grams, he went on to create a series of cameras creating multiple viewpoints of a space which were then collaged together. The multiple camera concept then made a lateral leap to being applied to cine film. The first camera involved a length of 16mm film negative, clear Perspex spacers providing a focal length and a strip of opaque 16mm cine magnetic tape with a pinhole drilled into each frame. A simple shutter over the magnetic tape then provided the means of exposure. The result was a tracking shot through a space. The profound revelation was that while the viewer experienced a move through space, time was frozen. A paradox! The effect is also known as temps mort (dead time) & virtual camera, with various companies advertising under names such as Timetrack, Multicam & Big Freeze.

A brief biography of James MacMillan from the Boston Symphony' 'Classical Companion'. James MacMillans "St. John Passion" is performed this week by the Boston Symphony under Sir Colin Davis. Sir Colin requested this major work from one of his favorite contemporary composers in part to commemorate the conductors own 80th birthday; he led the premiere in London in April 2008. The piece is a largescale work in two parts for chorus, orchestra, and baritone solo, building on the great traditional Passions of Bach in a dramatic setting, both traditional and modern, of the Passion narrative from the Gospel of John. These are the American premiere performances.

Macmillan Cancer Support - Macmillan Solutions
Macmillan Solutions is a new approach to enable trained volunteers to support people affected by cancer with the things that matter to them. In 2005 Macmillan Cancer Support began talking to people affected by cancer about how we could support them more in their daily lives. We also discussed this with service commissioners from health and social care and key policy makers and thinkers. People affected by cancer told us they wanted to regain a sense of independence choice and control over their lives following a cancer diagnosis. Macmillan Solutions will try out a new way of supporting people affected by cancer, which will add to what is already available. Macmillan Solutions will work with local communities to help them support each other by offering befriending opportunities, volunteering opportunities and a small sum of money to help pay for part of the help they need.
