Classic Game Room reviews the Japanese Sony Playstation 2 model PS2 SCPH-90000. If you want to play games like Thunder Force 6 and Front Mission 5 you need a machine that can play them, and American PS2's just won't do the trick. You really only have 2 options, modifications or importing a Japanese PS2. CGR decided to purchase a new Japanese region NTSC 100v PS2 from Play-asia.com with a heaping jar of pocket change and play Thunder Force VI like it's our job (it is). There are tons of import titles available only in Japan for the Playstation 1 and PS2. For some reason (money) these game companies make certain genres region locked or encoded and contain them to market specific parts of the world. They assume that Americans don't want to play Japanese SHMUPS like TF6 or Macross Plus or strategy games like Front Mission 2 and FM5. They thought wrong! We do want to play these games and although not cheap, it's not like you have to cut your arm off either. Importing a Japanese region NTSC Playstation 2 has never been easier or less expensive. This SCPH-90000 works on American AC power and plays games just like a US PS2. You can even set the system menus to English, and most games seem to have English menus anyway. Works with American PS2 memory cars. This review shows the differences between a Japanese PS2 and an American PS2 and how they stack up side by side. If you ever asked me for top shooters on the SNES, Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie would be one of the first I would mention. If youre familiar with Macross (wich was completly butchered for the US, know as Robotech), then you will not find strange to know that the ship on this game (a variable fighter) can easly switch between 3 modes: Fighter/GERWALK/Battroid. On this particular game, each represents different weapons for each of the 3 available pilots (Rick, Max or Millia). So theres a lot of strategy envolved to switch to each different mode in the correct situation. As if thats not enough to keep you busy, you can also try to turn the Zentradi enemies to your side as well (you will see me do this in the clip). Gorgeous graphics, great gameplay, good sound, what more could you want? Excelent game from Zamuse. I would like to see it released in the west, like many of my favorite SNES games, it never left Japan. Enjoy the clip!

Yes, you read that title correctly. This is an extra mission unlocked when you play through the Macross Frontier story mode. The unit has no fixed pilot or upgradable stats, but it does have a maxed out Tension stat. The Tension meter goes up automatically throughout the entire stage. You get 5 minutes to destroy as many Vajra as possible, with the maximum rank at 270 kills. Your basic guns do well, as does the one tension cost Missile Attack, but the melee attack is slow and unwieldy, more of a hindrance than anything else. Near the end, I use the Macross Cannon, which has recoil you must actively control at full charge. I have plans to do a review/Let's Play in the near future, but I want to clear out the remaining campaigns first to know what I'm doing and be able to show all the stages.

Oh man it's like an insane space shooter. Okay, you're a ship, you dock off your mothership, and fly to the enemy. You shoot your machine guns at some plane, and launch a few waves of missiles. Then, there's like 20 missiles chasing you?! Suddenly your jet turns into a mech and turns around to dodge and shoot the missiles. You're a jet now and chasing your next target with 10 missiles on you. In a flash, you're a mech again, but your head is a plane? You blow up some guy with missiles and your machine gun. Some missiles explode on you, and you quickly fly away in jet form again. You do a shuttle loop and you're suddenly dashing at an enemy plane in robot form with your fist extended. PAWNCH! You smack them and backflip off them while turning into a jet and flying away to your next target while shooting down and dodging 20 more missiles. You've been doing all that with 15 other missiles on you the whole time. As outdated as this game is, I love it. Heck, you can even play it online. This game really captures the awesomeness of being a jet that transforms into a mech and something in between which dodges hundreds of missiles while killing the crap out of stuff.
