Madiba's World Cup Message

Madiba urges the Springboks to bring the cup home. Full text of message: Congratulations to the Springboks, die Bokke, Amabokhobokho. To Jake, John and every single member of the team, the squad and the management -- well done. You have made us all very proud to be South Africans in the world. You remind us again so powerfully of that proud day in 1995 when we not only won the Rugby World Cup, but even more importantly, celebrated ourselves as one nation uniting behind our victorious team. We regret not being able to be with you in person today; but you can be assured that we will be with you in spirit every minute of the match. You are fortunate to have our President with you. He carries with him the good wishes and support of all South Africans, including ourselves. And there are thousands of compatriots out there, carrying the flag for this great nation of ours. We know that our boys have the ability, strength and determination to be victorious once more. We are a winning nation! We acknowledge our problems and challenges and then proceed to tackle them with determination and in a spirit of optimism. We have overcome much in order to be where we are. You, our national team, represent that spirit. You have done us exceedingly proud thus far. Play the game hard and honestly. And whatever the outcome hold your heads high. We are convinced that you will triumph and bring the trophy home. Go Springboks, go!
Eddy Grant and Kurt Darren - Gimme Hope Jo'anna

The musical struggle against apartheid came from outside South Africa's borders as well as within. In 1988 Guyanese-born British performer Eddy Grant released Gimme Hope Jo'anna, with its hybrid African-reggae rhythms and sharp anti-apartheid lyrics. It reached the top ten in several European countries, though it was naturally banned from airplay and official release in South Africa. This version is from a live performance at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday concert in Hyde Park, London in 2008, and features Afrikaans pop artist Kurt Darren. Grant's title refers to the Johannesburg which, though not one of South Africa's capital cities, was by far the largest and wealthiest, due to its gold and diamond-rich location. The implication of this, as well as the song's lyrics, was that apartheid was primarily economic in purpose - and that South Africa's political inequality, militaristic ventures and contrived philosophies and religious views were all predicated on maintaining white wealth and status. Nevertheless Gimme Hope Jo'anna was optimistic rather than bitter, a plea for change rather than a condemnation. Well Jo'anna she runs the country She runs in Durban and the Transvaal She makes a few of her people happy, oh She don't care about the rest at all She's got a system they call apartheid It keeps brothers in subjection But maybe pressure can make Jo'anna see How everybody could live as one CHORUS Gimme hope, Jo'anna. Hope, Jo'anna Gimme hope, Jo'anna, before the morning ...

South Africans have been celebrating Nelson Mandela's birthday. The icon of decades of struggle to overturn the country's apartheid regime is 93. The man himself, who spent 27 years in captivity for his beliefs, remained quietly at home but millions of schoolchildren played a central role in the festivities. Members of his family helped with 67 minutes of voluntary work - one minute for each of the 67 years of Mandela's political struggle. ... www.euronews.net

Afrika Ablaze - Happy Birthday Dance for Madiba (18/07/2011)

Today's Show (18 July): Afrika Ablaze performed on the Expresso show midway through June, much to the delight of our viewers. Their youthful energy and inspired dance choreography proved very popular with our presenters and our audience. In light of their achievements and the positive energy that they bring, we've decided to have them in studio once again to perform a special tribute dance for the great Nelson Mandela. What The Media Has to Say About Afrika Ablaze: " The Afrika Ablaze Dance Compay's breathtaking performance of A Standing Ovation was well worth the two standing ovations they received at The Artscape Theatre. A large part of the ovation was for the company's director/producer Glenda Jones who displayed brilliant creativeness that ensured a vibrant and exuberant production. " Raphael Wolf. Southern Mail. Wednesday 25th May 2005 " The energetic youth dance group of Afrika Ablaze performed to a sold out crowd and received a standing ovation on opening night at Artcape. " Alla Byrne, The Argus - Tonight (Talent Shines at Vibrant Show). Tuesday 24th May 2005 " The enthusiasm and raw talent of the Afrika Ablaze dancers was hailed by Cue as a slice of Cape Town dance heaven as they performed Dance For The Other Child at the Grahamstown Festival. The audience lapped up their natural talent. " Rafiek Mammon, Cape Argus. Tuesday 6th July 2004

Nelson Mandela...A Tribute To Madiba!

www.youtube.com A tribute to one of the greatest statesmen of our time. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. His father was Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe. Mandela himself was educated at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was acquitted in 1961. After the banning of the ANC in 1960, Nelson Mandela argued for the setting up of a military wing within the ANC. In June 1961, the ANC executive considered his proposal on the use of violent tactics and agreed that those members who wished to involve themselves in Mandela's campaign would not be stopped from doing so by the ANC. This led to the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe. Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to five years' imprisonment with hard labour. In 1963, when many fellow leaders of the ANC and the Umkhonto we Sizwe were arrested, Mandela was brought to stand trial with them for plotting to overthrow the government by violence. His statement from the dock received considerable international publicity. On June 12, 1964, eight of the accused, including Mandela, were sentenced to life imprisonment. From 1964 to 1982, he was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison, off Cape Town; thereafter, he was at Pollsmoor Prison ...

Madiba and Hallie

Nelson Mandela and Hallie Geier are and were two people who loved the world and everyone in it. They are two examples of people from different backgrounds and places in life who made their imprint on the world. This video presents the perspectives of Nelson Mandela, perhaps the most powerful living example of a life well-lived, alongside the compelling words of Hallie Geier, a young girl who was ahead of her time. LOVE, HALLIE is slated to perform a spoken-word piece infusing famous quotes from Nelson Mandela and the writings from Hallie Geier's journal to students from various summer programs in New York City. These events will be held the week of July 13th in Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Station. To learn more about LOVE, HALLIE's Mandela Day events, visit www.lovehallie.org/events/mandela.html!
