Maori Culture

Dutch navigator Abel Tasman was the first European to encounter the Maori. Four members of his crew were killed in a bloody encounter in 1642. In 1769 British explorer James Cook established friendly relations with some Maori. By 1800, visits by European ships were relatively frequent. At this time, war and disease took their toll on the Maori till eventually their population dropped to about 100000. In 1840 representatives of Britain and Maori chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi. This treaty established British rule, granted the Maori British citizenship, and recognized Maori land rights. Today many of the treaty's provisions are disputed and there ahs been and is an effort from the New Zealand Government to recompense Maori for some land that was illegally confiscated. Maori legend says that the Maori came from "Hawaiki", the legendary homeland about 1000 years ago. When the Maori arrived in Aotearoa (New Zealand) they found a land quite different to tropical Polynesia. New Zealand was not only colder, but it possessed many volcanoes and huge snow capped mountains. Aotearoa is the Maori name for New Zealand and means Land of the long white cloud. There are many theories about the origins of the Maori. some speculate that the island of Hawaiki could have been near Hawaii. The commonly accepted theory today, says that the Maori originated in China, and travelled via Taiwan, the Philippines to Indonesia, onto Melanesia and reached Fiji. From there to Samoa and on to the ...

Maori Powhiri (Welcome) Queenstown NZ

On the shores of Lake Wakatipu near Queenstown, New Zealand, we were welcomed by the local Maori with a "powhiri". It's a challenge. You're offered a feather or piece of fern and if you don't pick it up, it means you are there for a fight. So you pick it up. :-) The attendees were employees attending a regional, Asia/Pacific company conference. They were unaware this group was about to turn up in jet boats. Most people there were from around Asia or places other than New Zealand. They weren't aware of the correct protocol. The free Lindaur bubbly laid on had people fairly relaxed. 2008-11-09: I've uploaded more video from this event. Each is a video response to the one before it. twitter.com (Note: This video sat in a box on a video cassette for several years prior to the "invention" of YouTube. All bow down before YouTube. :-) ) The lyrics in Maori and English can be found here: folksong.org.nz

Maori Hangi

www.MaoriHangi.com A Maori hangi is a traditional cooking method used by indigenous New Zealanders. In fact, all Polynesian people have some version of the hangi. The New Caledonians have the "bougna", the Fijians the "lovo", the Samoans the "umu" and the Hawaiians the "luau". Apparently the Peruvians have a version of it too! See the comment to an earlier video on this channel. The cooking technique involves heating up stones over a fire and using them as the heat source in the bottom of a pit to cook food, which is placed above in a basket. The food is buried, so to speak, as soil is placed over the food, which is protected by wet cloths. The moisture in the cloth adds steam to the cooking process. Laying soil over the hangi lets it retain heat and steam during the cooking process. This is an ancient way of cooking. Archaelogists have found hangi stones dating back millenia. Isn't it interesting that indigenous people around the Pacific chose not to heat their food directly, with high heat, but indirectly, with hot stones. Direct high heat barbecuing involes a slight cancer risk, both from charred meat and flare-ups (oil from the meat setting fire). The native people probably realized somewhere along their long history that direct high heat wasn't a good idea in the long term. Hangi's take much preparation and labour. This is a time and labor intensive way of cooking! It may take up most of the day cooking! It's an inefficient way of cooking to - first heat stones, then ...

New Zealand recovers Maori heads from France

In a ceremony where music and singing mingled with calls to the spirit of ancestors, New Zealand recovered 20 mummified Maori heads Friday that had been held in French museums for nearly two centuries. The tattooed heads were handed over by French officials from Paris's Quai Branly Museum after a four-year political struggle. The Maori heads were once warriors who tattooed their faces with elaborate geometric designs to show their rank, and were an object of fascination for European explorers who collected and traded them from the 18th century onwards. PATEA MAORI CLUB 'Apr, Mon 30, 2012' - Hui nanny Kahu. A Heart Warming Farewell

Nanny' Hui Kahu , the front woman for number-one hit Māori song 'Poi E' has been farewelled at Wai-o-turi Marae this afternoon. The Patea Māori Club performed the song that made the group famous as her casket left the wharenui, destined for a local urupa where she will be buried. Nanny died in her Hawera home on Friday, aged 73, ending her battle with cancer and leaving her whanau, hapu, and iwi grief-stricken. Her body visited Pariroa Marae on Friday before being taken to Wai-o-turi Marae where it stayed for the weekend, allowing people to pay their respects. Hundreds turned out at the marae to honour the woman they all respected. Patea Māori Club tutor Janine Maruera says singing 'Poi E' at the tangi was poignant and emotional. "Performing at her tangi today was special but hard to perform without her. But if we can't carry on performing without her then she wouldn't have done her job," she says. "I can hear her saying 'mahia te mahi -- there's a job to be done, you do it' and that is the sort of person she was too." 'Poi E' grew out of tough economic times in Patea after the local freezing works closed, leaving a dwindling, dispirited community. It is a story of Patea's renaissance and rejuvenation. The famous song had a resurgence in 2010 when hit New Zealand film Boy recreated Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video to the 'Poi E' tune. Nanny flew around the world with the Patea Māori Club, performing in Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong, Scotland and the United States. She has ...

Maori Powhiri

The halls of the United Nations echoed with singing and chanting today during the colorful and lively traditional Maori ceremony to welcome UNDP Administrator Helen Clark. The event, called a powhiri (pronounced poor-fee-ree), began with the thunderous sounding of a conch shell and a Maori warriors dance, and ended with Helen Clark, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, and her Maori delegation pressing noses with senior UN officials in a hongi. Today I am truly humbled to be formally presented here to the UN and to UNDP by senior Maori leaders who have travelled to New York for this occasion, said Helen Clark. The powhiri is a traditional Maori ceremony which takes place when manuhiri, or visitors, and tangata whenua, or people of the land, meet and is a dynamic part of public life in New Zealand today. In this ceremony, Helen Clark and her delegation of Maori leaders represented the visitors and UNDP staff represented the people of the land. The ceremony entrusted Helen Clark to UNDP and marked her transition from being a representative of New Zealand to a representative of UNDP. Te Arikinui Kingi Tuheitia, the Maori King and Paramount Chief, led the Maori delegation, dressed in traditional garb, in presenting Clark to her new UN family. UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro and UNDP Associate Administrator Ad Melkert represented the UN at the event, each giving remarks partially in their native language of Kiswahili and Dutch respectively, as is customary ...
