Her name is synonymous with the French monarchy and all its excesses, but there is more to the story of Marie Antoinette than the simple tale of how a frivolous sovereign helped provoke the uprising that became the French Revolution. Acclaimed documentary filmmaker David Grubin paints a surprising portrait of a courageous figure and traces her journey from the splendors of a childhood in the mighty Austro-Hungarian Empire to a French guillotine.

Marie Antoinette came to the French court at Versailles an unsophisticated teenager and left, nearly two decades later, a reviled symbol of royal excess bound for the guillotine. The short shrift Sofia Coppola gives the larger political context within which Marie's life unfolded prompted derision when the film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival, but her focus is clear from the start: Marie's discontents are trivial in the grand scheme of history, but to her they were everything and the movie is about her. Vienna, 1770: The arranged marriage of pretty teenage princess Maria Antonia Josefa Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen (Kirsten Dunst), daughter of Empress Maria Theresa (Marianne Faithfull), to the shy, unprepossessing Dauphin Louis-Auguste (Jason Schwartzman), heir to the Bourbon throne, seals an alliance between Austria and France. Maria is escorted by Ambassador Mercy (Steve Coogan) to the border of the two countries and ceremonially divested of all things Austrian, even her beloved pug. "You may have as many French dogs as you like," says the steely Comtesse de Noailles (Judy Davis), who will instruct the newly christened "Marie Antoinette" in Versailles' complex rules of behavior. Alone and stifled by intricate protocol, her every move — from getting dressed to eating dinner — conducted in public, the inexperienced Marie is held responsible for her new husband's apparent lack of interest in consummating their marriage. This is a short bio story of Marie Antoinette, Queen consort of France in the late 1700s. It is my view and my interpretation, but all developed from what I've read about history. Of course, her story and the story of the French Revolution is much longer that this. ***After re-watching it almost a year after posting it, I would make some changes and want to clear some stuff up*** Of course, the story is much longer and complicated. However, I want to add that during her childhood, of course Marie Antoinette had access to very high education, she just wasn't the most dedicated student (who was?) and she still was VERY intelligent! Also, I have NO IDEA why I failed to mention her attempt at fleeing Paris while they were at Tuileries. That's why they were tried for treason in the first place! My view is she was young and misunderstood. Also keep in mind the Queen consort of France had little power. However the blame can't fall totally on Louis the 16th either because he was young and took some poor advice at times. Maybe I will make a part two video in the future. ******

Marie Antoinette + The Tudors? What could be better? Pretty self-explanatory. I took the liberty of creating an opening credit sequence for the film Marie Antoinette, as if it had been a televised series like the Showtime hit, The Tudors. I love lavish period pieces and I think the audio seems to fit well for both the Tudor and Hapsburg/Bourbon monarchs. Admittedly, I wasnt really a fan of Marie Antoinette when I first saw the film, but I am in love with the gorgeous costumes and lavish scenery. Although I sometimes find Sofia's editing choppy, the dialogue a bit too modernized, the 80's songs a bit out of place and scenes of Marie lolling in the grass or walking down stairs a little drawn out and repetitive, I still view this movie as a work of art in regards to its visuals.
