It's a very controversial bill that would affect the way police interact with suspects on the streets, and some are saying it creates two different sets of rules, if there is a gunfight. "Shade It Black" Author Jessica Goodell on RT with Marina Portnaya

Jessica Goodell discusses her book Shade It Black. Shade It Black: Death and After in Iraq Jessica Goodell with John Hearn 6 x 9, 192 pages, illustrations, 9781612000015, $24.95, hardback, Casemate May 25, 2011 In 2008, CBS' Chief Foreign Correspondent, Lara Logan, candidly speculated about the human side of the war in Iraq: "Tell me the last time you saw the body of a dead American soldier. What does that look like? Who in America knows what that looks like? Because I know what that looks like, and I feel responsible for the fact that no one else does..." Logan's query raised some important yet ignored questions: How did the remains of American service men and women get from the dusty roads of Fallujah to the flag-covered coffins at Dover Air Force Base? And what does the gathering of those remains tell us about the nature of modern warfare and about ourselves? These questions are the focus of Jess Goodell's story, Shade it Black: Death and After in Iraq. Jess enlisted in the Marines immediately after graduating from high school in 2001, and in 2004 she volunteered to serve in the Marine Corps' first officially declared Mortuary Affairs unit in Iraq. Her platoon was tasked with recovering and processing the remains of fallen soldiers. With sensitivity and insight, Jess describes her job retrieving and examining the remains of fellow soldiers lost in combat in Iraq, and the psychological intricacy of coping with their fates, as well as her own. Immortal Technique: 'Revolution here to stay!' (full OWS interview) [Marina Portnaya, RT, New York]

The young revolutionary movement Occupy Wall Street needs to be pushed forward to evolve into a working force that can influence US domestic affairs, believes Immortal Technique, a hip-hop star who has backed the group from the start. As the demonstrations against the Wall Street corporations enter their fourth week in New York, elsewhere they have grown into a nationwide protest with 45 states and nearly 200 cities now involved in the rally. "The recent movement is the biggest expression of democracy in the past few decades here in America," states Immortal Technique, who has become one of the spokespersons for the movement. What started out as a peaceful movement has now been plagued by unrest in the Big Apple, where confrontations between demonstrators and police are only becoming tenser. Police brutality has become a tripping point for the escalation of people's anger, the rapper believes. When the pictures hit the internet, they went viral. "We saw a bunch of defenseless people simply expressing their freedom -- and they were penned off, they were sprayed down, being obviously not in danger of harming any police officers. And 'white shirts' did not seem to be held responsible for it, as if they were almost above the law," the artist explains. The reaction from the city authorities is biased and aimed at intensifying the protests, so they can portray them in a dishonest manner in the media, argues Immortal Technique.

Police go military

US police officers have used heavy-handed techniques and high-tech weaponry to take down alleged criminals, as most evident in the brutal beat-downs of Occupy Wall Street protesters. An onslaught of attacks with pepper-spray, tear gas guns and batons are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the arsenal of arms that the police are pulverizing peaceful protesters with.
