The Marketplace hub looks very similar to how it did in Windows Phone 7. There's now a search button at the bottom since the hardware search button only goes to Bing now. There's also a new graphic panorama design for the games section where as previously we only had panoramas for the top level, music, and apps sections. There's also a new section called podcasts where you can browse through and subscribe to various podcasts right from the device. You no longer have to subscribe to podcasts from the Zune desktop software. If you don't want to subscribe and download a number of episodes for a certain podcast, you have the option to just stream it right there over the internet. Yes, there are video and audio podcasts available. Unfortunately, there's currently no "Share" menu for podcasts. The Marketplace search has been hugely improved and now offers pivot tabs for different types of Marketplace content such as music, podcasts, apps + games. Zune Playlists still only show up in searches and unfortunately can only be streamed. I really wish some of those excellent custom Zune playlists could be downloaded straight to the device in full (without using the desktop software.) A few things are still missing from the Windows Phone Marketplace. I wish it had the Zune "Picks" listings that you'll also find on the Zune HD and desktop Zune software which recommends things you might like. Google Apps Marketplace Overview

In this video, I continue my series of Google Android videos and discuss the Android Marketplace. The Android Marketplace is Google's answer to the iTunes App Store. Within the marketplace, you'll find many applications both free and paid sorted by category. I had heard many stories about how much the Android Marketplace lacked applications, but I really didn't find that to be the case. When compared to the iTunes App Store, sure it has much less, but there's plenty there for the average consumer. The controls are simple to navigate, applications include a summary and reviews, and the pricing structures seem decent. I was unable to experience the purchasing process since the review unit I have does not allow one to purchase apps, but downloading free apps was a breeze. Every download occurs in the background and notifies you (via the wonderful Android notification system) when it's complete. I've downloaded quite a few apps, and I plan to try many more using the Google Android Marketplace. Enjoy!

You may have heard of the book by Noam Chomsky (and Ed Herman) with the same title as this video. But actually the ideas in this video are based on a different book by the same title, "Manufacturing Consent" by Michael Burawoy, which was written in 1979, years before the Chomsky book. Chomsky's book is about the institutional structure of the media and they way this imposes an ideology upon a society. Burawoy argues that the structure of capitalist social relations generates its own illusions, ideology and consent, prior to the imposition of propaganda through media and schools. I think there is much to be admired about Chomsky's work, but I also think that Burawoy's work sheds some even more important insights into the way ideology is created and consent is "manufactured". After a viewer mistakenly thought this entire video was an attack on Chomsky, I just want to clarify here: It is not about Chomsky at all. I just mention Chomsky here so that the two "Manufacturing Consents" don't get conflated. When I make a couple comments about "libertarians" in this video I am not referring to Chomsky or those that identify as libertarian-anarchist. I am referring to the right-wing, free-market libertarians. I have great respect for much of what Chomsky and other anarchist thinkers have added to the left and I would hate for anyone to think this video was an attack upon that tradition.
