Robotic seagull able to imitate flight CCTV News

Is it a robot or a real bird? Only German design and innovation company Festo may know. The company has succeeded in creating a flying, robotic model seagull that can take-off, fly and land without assistance. To be as free as a bird is rooted in man's most ancient dreams. The so-called SmartBird designed by Festo company brings those dreams one step closer. Modeled on the herring gull, SmartBird gets its aerodynamic agility from its wings. The wings can not only beat up and down but twist like a real bird. The head of Festo's bionic learning network, Markus Fischer unveils the secret. Markus Fischer, Head Festo's Bionic Learning Network, said, "So, we learned from the birds how to move the wing and that is very positive to use this active torsion. And the second thing was that birds are very energy-efficient, so Smartbird is really a lightweight structure. It's all carbon fibre and it is 450 grams and two meters is the spanwidth." The lightweight SmartBird was created with minimal materials to make it resource- and energy-efficient. An active articulated torsional drive unit gives the bird's wings propulsion and lift. A flight control unit allows the SmartBird to glide without flapping. Though the device was initially designed for the firm's internal research, the company believes it has industrial applications.

TV9 - KIDS ENJOY "DUPLICATE ELEPHANTS" IN NAMMA BENGALURU

TV9 - "DUPLICATE ELEPHANTS" IN NAMMA BENGALURU.......! Inspired by the flexibility of the elephant's long nose, German researchers have developed an entirely new robot arm made mostly of plastic. This high-tech helper is light and cheap enough to work both in industries or as a helping hand at home The elephant skillfully uses his trunk to lift an apple from the ground. Carefully, he surrounds it with the tip of the trunk and lifts it high above his head before placing it gently into the hand of his keeper. There are roughly 40000 muscles that make the trunk an extremely flexible gripping hand that can move freely in any direction and can even rotate. An ingenious tool -- flexible, powerful and yet sensitive. A similar level of flexibility and gentle performance is provided by the high-tech trunk developed by researchers at Festo, working together with colleagues at the Fraunhofer Institute IPA. With three 'fingers' the high-tech version cautiously lifts a raw egg from the hand of developer Peter Post before gingerly passing it along to Markus Fischer of Festo -- almost as elegantly as its biological model. How it works The delicate and flowing movements are made possible by the sophisticated design of the trunk. "The plastic trunk is made of bellows structures arrayed in series, a movable hand axis and a grabber with three fingers," explains Post, who heads the project at Festo. The structural elements are flexible and can be manipulated using compressed air. If air is ...
