Meet the Mathematicians

Highlights from "Meet the Mathematicians" at the University of Nottingham... Meet the Mathematicians Ask most school students to describe a typical mathematician and you are likely to receive the same clichéd response; geeky, grey-haired man who lacks social skills and has no personal life outside maths. Surprisingly, this is not always the case! In order to correct such misconceptions, in April 2009 students from around the UK were invited to a Meet the Mathematicians (MtM) event with the School of Mathematical Sciences and supported by funding from the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC). There were three main aims for the event. The organisers wanted to convey that Mathematics is a living and evolving subject, each day being applied to the description and understanding of the physical, biological, commercial, digital and social universes around us. The MtM day was designed to help to provide a clearer insight into what the experience of studying Mathematics at university might be like, beyond the usual UCAS day visit. University staff, researchers and postgraduate students were on hand to help with a programme of activities meet with students to explain what they did and why. The day gave a glimpse of life after a Mathematics degree with examples of professionals using the subject within their careers.

Archimedes the Greatest Mathematician II

Discoveries and inventions : The Golden Crown, The Archimedes Screw, The Claw of Archimedes, The Archimedes Heat Ray...etc Archimedes of Syracuse (Greek: Ἀρχιμήδης; c. 287 BC c. 212 BC) was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. Although few details of his life are known, he is regarded as one of the leading scientists in classical antiquity. Among his advances in physics are the foundations of hydrostatics, statics and the explanation of the principle of the lever. He is credited with designing innovative machines, including siege engines and the screw pump that bears his name. Modern experiments have tested claims that Archimedes designed machines capable of lifting attacking ships out of the water and setting ships on fire using an array of mirrors.[1] Archimedes is generally considered to be the greatest mathematician of antiquity and one of the greatest of all time.[2][3] He used the method of exhaustion to calculate the area under the arc of a parabola with the summation of an infinite series, and gave a remarkably accurate approximation of pi.[4] He also defined the spiral bearing his name, formulas for the volumes of surfaces of revolution and an ingenious system for expressing very large numbers. Archimedes died during the Siege of Syracuse when he was killed by a Roman soldier despite orders that he should not be harmed. Cicero describes visiting the tomb of Archimedes, which was surmounted by a sphere inscribed within a cylinder ...

Are Mathematicians Creative?

Is doing research in mathematics a creative process? When mathematicians talk of their subject as beautiful, what do they mean? What are their motivations? Their dreams? Their disappointments? Produced by Chrystal Cherniwchan, Azita Ghassemi and Prof. Jon Keating, this film is part of the Mathematical Ethnographies Project (2009). The focus is not on mathematics, but on the people who create and teach mathematics - on mathematicians.
