Matisse (1869 - 1954) used colors like nobody else. Modern commercial art is heavily influenced by the way he constructed his paintings with seemingly simple, yet entirely brilliant, strokes. EDIT- Matisse was an emin's pouched rat (Crycetomis emini), a smaller, sleeker relative of the gambian pouched rat (Crycetomis gambianus). The emin's pouched rat has a longer snout, it's fur is very sleek and body is thin and longer. They have a clear line of demarkation from it's dark brown upper body and it's greyish white belly. The gambian rat has a short snout, a bulkier body, is a uniform greyish color, and a bit "rougher" looking fur. My emin's pouched rat weighed about 4 lbs. at his peak, was SOLID muscle, made lots of "churbling" noises (almost like a parrot) and was very playful outside his cage. He was extremely intelligent, scarily so, and figured things out instantly. He was also VERY stubborn, and if he didn't want to do something, there was no way you could make him. Henri Matisse was born at Le Cateau-Cambrésis in the North of France on December 31, 1869. His parents, Emile Matisse and Héloise Gérars, had a general store selling household goods and seed. Henri planned on a legal career, and in 1887/88 studied law in Paris, in 1889 he was employed as a clerk in a solicitor's office. It was in 1890 that he was first attracted to painting. Confined to his bed for nearly a year (1890) after an intestinal operation, he chose drawing as a pastime.

At the academie Julian he became a student of William Adolphe Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau. After meating John Peter Russel, he changed his style completely. Matisse first started to paint in 1889, when his mother had brought him art supplies durig a period of convalescence following an attack of appendicitis. He discoverd a "kind of paradise" as he later discribed it, and deceided to become an artist, deeply disappointing his father.
