I've used this thing once so far and it is great. I cut the gears from half-inch baltic birch because that is all I had at the time. I now have three-eighths stock and plan on cutting the proper thickness gears and I'm sure the gears will mesh even better once completed.

Modular Marble Machine made from plans from Matthias Wandel, website woodgears.ca. I modified the plans by drilling 1/4" registration holes instead of Matthias' suggested 5/8". I used 1/4" dowels cut to a little less than 3/4" length to register the components and it worked quite well. Mr. Wandel is an extraordinary engineer and you would be amazed at his wooden devices found on his website woodgears.ca.

Plans here: woodgears.ca My innovation on the box joint jig. Instead of indexing fingers off the previous finger, this jig uses gearing and a screw to precisely position the wood for each cut on the saw. This makes setup more repeatable, speeds up opertation. and eliminates cumulative errors.

As part of my Bandsaw build from the plans of Matthias Wandel, I had to turn the wheels to ensure they are running true. Also to shape the main pulley and put the crown on the wheels. Lastly the wheels has to balanced. This video shows how it was done as described in the plans.
