Lourié - Two Mazurkas

Two Mazurkas Op. 7 (1912) Arthur Lourié (1892-1966) was an important musical figure in post-1917 Russia and a composer of decidedly avant-garde music. In the wake of the October Revolution, Lourié was appointed chair of the Music division of Soviet Education Ministry, which was established to cultivate a new and revolutionary music suitable for the Soviet citizen. During the 1910s, Lourié was viewed as a fanatical advocate of all modern art and some of his early compositions anticipate the musical advances of the West vis-à-vis the Second Viennese School and "Les Six". His extreme policies eventually clashed with a number of musicians and Soviet bureaucrats, causing him to bitterly resign his post, and in 1921, Lourié followed the footsteps of other Russian émigrés and left Russia for good. He settled in Berlin and then Paris, joining Stravinsky's circle, but when WWII engulfed Europe, Lourié fled again to America, where he remained in obscurity for the rest of his life. His early works show tangible influences from Scriabin, but the trajectory of his aesthetics is far-reaching: one can find Scriabinesque, Rachmaninovian or Webern-like piano works, orchestral compositions hinting at Prokofiev, and choral music recalling Mussorgsky.

Chopin Mazurkas Op 56 No 1 & Op 63 No 2 Neuhaus Rec 1953.wmv

Heinrich Neuhaus (1888-1964) studied with Blumenfeld and Michalowski in Russia and with Godowskv in Vienna. He taught at the Kiev Conservatory and later at the Moscow Conservatory. He was the cousin of Szymanowski and the nephew of Blumenfeld. Neuhaus became one of the most famous teachers of the century; his classes at the Moscow Conservatory were crowded with students hoping to gain inspiration. He taught some of the outstanding pianists of Russia including Gilels and Richter, both of whom greatly acknowledged their debt to him. His warmth and great teaching instincts are evidenced in his book, The Art of Piano Playing. Byran Crimp writes that Alexander Goldenweiser, Konstattin Igumnov and Heinrich Neuhaus dominated the Russian/Soviet tuition during the first half of the twentieth century. It is also interesting that on page 43 of Horowitz, a Biography, Glenn Plaskin writes, "Volodya took an instant interest in the man, (Neuhaus), and later insisted that, next to Blumendfeld., Neuhaus (1888-1964), was the most important influence in his early development." A comparison of Neuhaus's performances of Chopin mazurkas with those of Horowitz is enlightening.

He is widely regarded as the greatest Polish composer, and ranks as one of music's greatest tone poets.[4] He was born in the village of Żelazowa Wola, in the Duchy of Warsaw, to a Polish mother and French-expatriate father, and in his early life was regarded as a child-prodigy pianist. In November 1830, at the age of 20, Chopin went abroad; following the suppression of the Polish November Uprising of 1830--31, he became one of many expatriates of the Polish "Great Emigration." In Paris, he made a comfortable living as a composer and piano teacher, while giving few public performances. A Polish patriot,[5][6] in France he used the French versions of his names and eventually, to avoid having to rely on Imperial Russian documents, became a French citizen.[7][8][9] After some ill-fated romantic involvements with ...

PATRICIO MOLINA, PIANIST A native of Chile, the 18- year-old pianist Patricio Molina made his debut at the tender age of three appearing with the Catholic University of Chile's Orchestra on the popular television program "Venga Conmigo" (come with me). Immediate following his appearance, Patricio was awarded a full scholarship by "Amigos del Teatro Municipal", the educational funding arm of the Municipal Theater of Santiago. This scholarship enabled Patricio to study free of charge in the School for the Arts within the University of Chile for the next ten years. During this time he won the "Claudio Arrau International Piano Competition" three times (I, II and III Level), and performed concerts in Germany, Jordan and throughout Chile. Upon his arrival in the United States in 2004, Patricio entered Manhattan School of Music where he is a full scholarship student in the studio of Dr. Marc Silverman, Chairman of the Conservatory's Piano Department. His talents were quickly recognized by the New York Times which described him as "a gifted young artist" when they heard his performance on the Symphony Space "Wall-to-Wall Stravinsky" program. In 2005, Patricio was awarded First Prize in the International Piano Competition of New as well the Grand Prize as the outstanding performer in all categories of the competition. Mazurkas Op. 59: No 3 In F Sharp Minor

As requested: Mazurkas, Op. 59 are a set of three Mazurkas for solo piano by Frédéric Chopin. The set was composed and published in 1845. Mazurka in F-sharp minor, the final piece of the set is a waltz-like composition. The piece begins with a memorable and powerful melody, the second theme is somewhat more joyful than the first. The left hand accompaniment of the piece experiments with descending chromatic harmonies, although this does not affect the melody which remains defined throughout the piece. Disclaimer: The performer of this is by Maestro Jamalpour, and is not to be profited from.

Chopin Mazurka Op 50 No 2 Rosenthal Rec 1935.wmv

At age 8,Rosenthal,as did Koczalski, became a student of Chopin's pupil, Karl Mikuli and studied with him for about 5 years. He later became a pupil of Liszt. Josef Hofmann, is quoted as saying that as a youth, he thought Rosenthal was "terrific" and that he tried to imitate his playing. The eminent American piano critic, James Huneker wrote of Rosenthal that "he plays his instrument magnificently, overwhelmingly. He is the Napoleon, the conqueror among virtuosi. His tone is very sonorous, his touch singing, and he commands the entire range of nuance from the ripplmg fiortura of the Chopin Barcarolle, to the cannon-like thunderings of the A-flat Polonaise. His octaves and chords baffle all critical experience and appraisement. As others play presto in single notes, so he dashes off double-notes, thirds, sixths and octaves. His Don Juan Fantasy, part Liszt, part Mozart, is entirely Rosenthalian in performance He is the epitome of the orchestra and in a tonal duel with the orchestra he has never been worsted. ... His touch is crystal-like in its clearness, therefore his tone lacks the sensuousness ot Paderewski and de Pachmann." It is unfortunate that Rosenthal never choose to record the works mentioned in Huneker's paean to Rosenthal's playing.

Samuil Feinberg plays Scriabin Mazurka Op 3 no 1

Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915) from 7 Mazurkas Opus 3 no. 1 piano: Samuil Feinberg (rec. 1952) Feinberg (1890-1962) was a pupil of Alexander Goldenweiser and one of the most eminent Russian virtuosos of his generation. Feinberg met Scriabin at the age of 23, he had the furtune of being one of the very few young pianists Scriabin appreciated; while he reproached almost all of them for a style which he considered too hard and insufficiently expressive. In these 7 mazurkas Opus 3 which I present here, we may understand Scriabin's appreciation!
