China to open pollution data to public

The Chinese government has stepped up efforts to make data on the country's air quality more transparent, including allowing the public to tour the country's pollution monitoring centre. It is a rare bow to public pressure, as citizens have been complaining of hugely underestimated rates of pollution. Many experts say the government has not taking enough steps to fight the "hazardous" problem, caused mainly by the usage of fossil fuels, which many of China's nearly 1.4 billion residents rely on for energy. The People's Republic of China is preparing for a once-in-a-decade transition of power. When president and Communist Party chief Hu Jintao ends his 10 years in charge he is expected to be replaced by 57-year-old Xi Jinping. Though his official biography extolls his virtues as a good party official with a strong work ethic who comes from a family with solid revolutionary credentials, little else is known about him. Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan went to a remote village in China's Shaanxi Province to learn more about his upbringing.

The Chinese government has imposed on a dissident artist a massive tax bill for alleged tax evasion, which many argue is politically motivated. Thousands of Ai Weiwei's supporters have mobilised to help him cover the 15m yuan ($2.4m) bill and avoid a jail term, a development the government did not expect. Growing concern over China's 'disappeared'

Dozens of Chinese activists, lawyers, and bloggers have been victims of state-backed, extrajudicial detentions over the years, of which many have simply disappeared, not to be seen again for months. Human Rights Watch says these disappearances are an alarming new trend which the government is refusing to address. Many human rights organisations and activists are concerned that the country is currently working on a new draft of its criminal law that would make disappearances legal. Human-rights lawyer goes on trial in China

A prominent human-rights lawyer has gone on trial in China facing charges of "inciting a disturbance" for doing legal defence work for farmers who have had their land seized by government officials. Ni Yulan and her husband, Dong Ji-Cheen, were detained in April along with hundreds of other activists, but their trial lacks transparency. Early on Thursday morning, police vans brought Ni to a courthouse in Beijing, but journalists who arrived to cover the trial and diplomats who had been sent to observe were quickly stopped from filming, ushered into a building across the street and told they would not be allowed to film or report. The US treasury secretary, Timothy Geithner, is visiting Beijing this week, hoping to gain China's support for US sanctions on Iran's oil industry.
