His family, however, was unable to pay for extended formal education. During Mendel's studies at the Philosophical Institute of the University of Olmütz, he was forced to fund himself via tutoring. Gregor Johann Mendel was an Austrian Augustinian monk and scientist, who gained posthumous fame as the figurehead of the new science of genetics for his study of the inheritance of certain traits in pea plants. Mendel showed that the inheritance of these traits follows particular laws, which were later named after him. The significance of Mendel's work was not recognized until the turn of the 20th century. The independent rediscovery of these laws formed the foundation of the modern science of genetics. The RepRap is an open source 3D printer that you can build yourself. The first official version of the RepRap is the Darwin. The second one is the Mendel. This is a short movie of my Mini-Mendel build. The Mini-Mendel is a smaller version of the new design, which was untested up to now. The Mini-Mendel was printed on my two Darwins, of which one was printed by the other one. The movie also shows one of its first prints. The quality is expected to improve a lot as the machine was barely configured and calibrated, but it does show that everything works!
