LINK: tinyurl.com Arguably the greatest and most influential Tex-Mex group ever, the Sir Douglas Quintet epitomized Texas' reputation as a fertile roots music melting pot and established the career of Tex-Mex cult legend Doug Sahm. The Quintet mixed country, blues, jazz, R&B, Mexican conjunto/norteño music, Cajun dances, British Invasion rock & roll, garage rock, and even psychedelia into a heady stew that could only have come from Texas. Although they went largely underappreciated during their existence (mostly in the '60s), their influence was far-reaching and continues to be felt in Texas (particularly the similarly eclectic Austin scene) and beyond; afterward, Sahm embarked on a frequently fascinating solo career and reunited with the Quintet or its individual members several times over the years. According to legend, the Sir Douglas Quintet was the brainchild of Houston producer Huey P. Meaux, who at the height of the British Invasion took a stack of Beatles records into a hotel room and studied them while getting drunk on wine. He found that the beats often resembled those of Cajun dance songs and hit upon the idea of a group that could blend the two sounds well enough to fool Beatles fans into giving a local band a chance. He is primarily known as a Schlager singer. Although his first appearance in the hit parade was in 1962 ("Lauter Schöne Worte"), he had his first big hit in 1969. "Mendocino", the German adaptation of a song by the Sir Douglas Quintet, was the biggest selling single that year in Germany. The record was released in September 1969, reached number three for five weeks, selling over a million copies. Ariola presented him with a gold record in October 1970. Further hits such as "Barfuß im Regen" (1970), "Tränen lügen nicht" (literally, "Tears Don't Lie", recorded in English as "When A Child Is Born") (1974) and "Musst Du jetzt gerade gehen, Lucille" (1977) followed. He also composed the music for the popular international horror movie, Mark of the Devil (1970). Outside of Germany, he is best known for his work as a member of the new age band, Cusco, along with Kristian Schultze. He has been nominated for the American Grammy Award three times .

Spearfishing Northern California's Mendocino Coast
Sam and Kirby pole spear spearfishing in Northern California. Depths were averaging between 30 and 50 feet. Water temperature was 47F. Many fish were seen, but only a few were taken for dinner. The lingcod weighed about 13lbs, the cabezon was about 22" and the black rockfish were all between 4 and 5lbs. Also shown were a polychaete worm, a rock scallop, a black and yellow rockfish, and a pinto abalone. Sam in black is wearing a 7mm Picasso wetsuit and Pursuit carbon fiber blades with Omer Millennium pockets . Kirby in blue is wearing a 7mm Sporasub wetsuit and Picasso Camu Fiberglass fins. The dive board is called a Banks Board and can be found on the website banksboard.com The polespear is a Crist with 5ft body with an 18in flopper shaft. Mendocino County Short-tailed Albatross
This immature Short-tailed Albatross was (first spotted by Jerry White) found on a Mendocino Coast Audubon Society pelagic trip on 15 May 2011. This bird was found only 6 miles offshore of Fort Bragg around 0905 and came in to investigate the Menhadden Oil drip that also attracted over 100 Black-footed Albatrosses. This is only Mendocino countie's 2nd record and first record for pelagic boat trip in Northwestern California. Ron LeValley is giving the commentary in the background.
