"Faith community turns out to process 42000 cans of turkey for hunger relief in Haiti There were plenty of helping hands in Goshen, Indiana. Holding knives of all descriptions, 100 pairs of hands moved with purpose. They grabbed a turkey thigh, plopped it on a cutting board, then guided the knives through the cubing process. Then the pieces were scooped up and tossed into a plastic bucket. In a nutshell, that's how 77000 pounds of turkey thighs is being reduced to 42000 cans of food this week in Goshen." I explore what it is that makes a Southern Manitoban Mennonite tick in this mock interview, in which Bertram Woodsworth (fictitious) picks the brain of Corny Loepkky (also fictitious) for the Mennonite political/cultural perspective (partly fictitious, as it is here portrayed). This video was made out of love for the Manitoban Mennonites (I myself being of Mennonite descent), and is in no way meant to offend. I also realise that not every aspect of this video is authentically British or Mennonite, respectively; it is simply intended to produce a few chuckles.

Mennonite cookbook celebrates family dinners, around the globe
If you are what you eat, the women of the Graber family are worldly, adventuresome, creative and traditional. The women — matriarch Esther Rose Graber, her five daughters and daughter-in-law — wrote "The Everyday Feast" cookbook, which Good Books of Intercourse published this month. It's a collection of recipes Graber gathered over the years reflecting husband Ronald Graber's childhood in India and the family's years in Puerto Rico, where he worked as a surgeon at a Mennonite hospital. "We intended to go for five years but we stayed," Esther Graber, 81, said Thursday during a stop on her cookbook tour at The Good Cooking Store in Intercourse with twins Ann Graber Miller and Sibyl Graber Gerig. Graber lives part of the year in Puerto Rico and part in Elkhart, Ind. The recipes also reflect the various places around the world their children lived or spent time, such as Bulgaria, Cambodia, China and Mexico. And the 252-page book lets the reader learn a bit about this artistic family — Graber has been a book illustrator, Miller is an interior designer and painter and Gerig also is an illustrator — and the role food plays for the family beyond merely providing sustenance. "The Mennonite people in the surrounding area can trace their heritage directly to the Swiss - South German regions of Europe of the 1520's. Like their Dutch - North German counterparts, these Anabaptists, as they were called, were committed to a life of Christian disciplineship in the context of a brotherhood, which stressed the 'priesthood of every believer'. The Swiss - South German Mennonites sought religious freedom in the United States - especially, at first, Pennsylvania - as early as the late 1600's and early 1700's. Around 1800 many continued their quest and moved north from Pennsylvania to "Upper Canada", to what later came to be known as Waterloo County, Ontario. Here, in the 1880's, these who have come to be known as "Old Order" separated themselves from other Mennonites of the county." EMU Trash Fashion Show at Mennonite Youth Convention 2009
Eastern Mennonite University took its trash fashion show on the road to Mennonite Youth Convention at Columbus, Ohio. It featured formal dresses made out of plastic grocery bags and old filmstrip, shirts made out of aluminum foil, shorts made out of playing cardsand this was just the tip of the iceberg. EMU students and select youth convention participants wowed audiences with the wide range of trash they were able to creatively shape into fashion while learning about consumerism and the lifecycle of material goods.
