Enjoy!Rene Leibowitz (1913-1972) was born in Warsaw but moved to Paris in his teens and there began a long, illustrious conducting career. Particularly interested in contemporary music, he studied with Webern and Schoenberg and wrote a detailed analysis of twelve-tone music. A keen ear for instrumental coloration (Ravel was his orchestration teacher) was evident in his kaleidoscopic transcriptions of such works as Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C (for double orchestra!). But he is best known for his often highly personal renditions of many staples of the Classical and Romantic repertoire.

In this 1957 recording, twenty-year old Vladimir Ashkenazy performs the Mephisto Waltz, S.514, by Franz Liszt. Icreated this music video from the LP shown above, released to the public in the USA in 1959 as Ashkenazy was making his debut tour of the United States. This LP -- with other works by Liszt, as well as Rachmaninov and Prokofiev, was only the second album recorded by the pianist. So that there is no question in the mind of the listener, I rely principally on images of the the LP and LP jacket in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these. In this segment, we get our first demos of the Mephisto and Panama amps. The Mephisto is two amps in one--loaded with two 6V6 and two EL84 tubes. Play each channel separately or blend them together for a unique sound. With both channels cranked, it pushes about 25 watts and has built in attenuation. In addition, the Panama goes falls in line with Bogner's International line of amps. This model is a 6V6-loaded, 4-watt bedroom monster with plenty of gain for any style of player. PLAYLIST: www.youtube.com Mephisto is the title of a 1981 film adaptation of Klaus Mann's novel of the same name, directed by István Szabó, and starring Klaus Maria Brandauer as Hendrik Höfgen. The film was a co-production between companies in West Germany, Hungary and Austria. The film adapts the story of Mephistopheles and Doctor Faustus by having the main character Hendrik Höfgen abandon his conscience and continue to act and ingratiate himself with the Nazi Party and so keep and improve his job and social position. The plot's bitter irony is that the protagonist's most fond dream is to play Mephisto - but in order to achieve this dream he in effect sells his soul, and realises too late that in reality he is Faustus; it is the Nazi leader having a major role in the film (modeled on Goering) who is the true Mephisto. Both the film and Mann's 1936 novel mirror the career of Mann's brother-in-law, Gustaf Gründgens, who is considered by many to have supported the Nazi Party and abandoned his previous political views for personal gain rather than conscience. (Playing Mephisto was indeed the peak of Gründgens' career, though in reality this was long after the fall of the Nazis.) However, Mann's book is satirical, making Höfgen more a lampoon than a character in his own right, while the film offers a more realistic exploration of a flawed but recognisably human character

Der Tanz in der Dorfschenke, S514, R181, "Mephisto Waltz No. 1" (1859--62) This is the solo piano version of the famous first Mephisto Waltz by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886), performed here by the excellent Canadian pianist André Laplante. The work was inspired by an episode from "Faust" by Nikolaus Lenau: "There is a wedding feast in progress in the village inn, with music, dancing, carousing. Mephistopheles and Faust pass by, and Mephistopheles induces Faust to enter and take part in the festivities. Mephistopheles snatches the fiddle from the hands of a lethargic fiddler and draws from it indescribably seductive and intoxicating strains. The amorous Faust whirls about with a full-blooded village beauty in a wild dance; they waltz in mad abandon out of the room, into the open, away into the woods. The sounds of the fiddle grow softer and softer, and the nightingale warbles his love-laden song."
