Why is Bowater Mersey Paper Co. Ltd closing?

People in the Liverpool area are reeling from the news that the Bowater Mersey Paper Co. Ltd. mill may close by the end of the year, and many employees are beginning to look for new jobs. Parent company, AbitibiBowater, announced that the Brooklyn pulp and paper mill's manufacturing, electricity and labour costs have become too expensive and the mill is not competitive. Phillip Anthony, who has been a welder at the mill for 23 years, said he is considering looking for a new job right away. Seven people left the mill last week to look for new jobs, he said. "It doesn't look good down there. They've been doing cutbacks, roll backs in wages, going down in certain periods of the year," Anthony said Thursday. "A lot of people now are bailing. They're worried about what's going to happen. Everybody is worried about what's going to happen, not just the people at Bowater, but the community. If something happens, it's going to be devastating...It's going to be a retirement place." Two years ago, he said, he turned down a job offer at the Halifax Shipyard. He now regrets that decision. Phillip Anthony has worked at Bowater Mersey for 23 years.Phillip Anthony has worked at Bowater Mersey for 23 years. (CBC)Anthony, 49, said he had been hoping to retire from the mill. Now he is going to investigate whether he can get a job either at Halifax Shipyard or the Shelburne Ship Repair yard. "I've got to do something. I've got to pay the bills. River Mersey 1983 - Mv Royal Iris(1951), Mv Overchurch, Manx Maid

This is pure nostalgia. A video I took on the Mersey ferry Overchurch from Seacombe to Liverpool in 1983. The old Royal Iris comes into Seacombe ahead of the Overchurch, so quite a good bit of rare video of her. When we approach Liverpool, the Manx maid can be seen embarking passengers. Both landing stages look a bit different than they do now. The morning started off hazey but turned into a very warm sunny day.

The Stone Roses - Mersey Paradise

One of The Stone Roses best songs, and It was only a B-side. This song can be found on the album ''Turns Into Stone'' Lyrics: River splashes against the rocks And I scale the slope and hope the tracks won't Lead me down to dark black pits or Places where we fall to bits If she were there I'd hold her down I'll push her under while she drowns And couldn't breathe and claw for air She doesn't care for my despair Or is it me? I'm the one that's wrong? You see it in the sea River cools where I belong In my Mersey paradise As I stare an oil wheel comes Sailing by and I feel like Growing fins and falling in With the bricks the bags the rusty tin I swim along without a care I'm eating sand when I need air You can bet your life I'll meet a pike who'll Wolf me down for tea tonight I want to be (I want to be) Where the drownings are You see in this heat River cools where I belong In my Mersey paradise I want to be (I want to be) Where the drownings are You see in this heat River cools where I belong Oh yeah I want to be (I want to be) Where the drownings are You see in this heat River cools where I belong In my Mersey paradise.

Wimple Winch - Rumble On Mersey Square South (1967)

Great psychedelic/freakbeat band from Manchester. Released as a single for Fontana in 1967 (b/w "Typical British Workmanship") Formerly known as The Four Just Men, then The Just Four Men, a change of style brought a further name change Wimple Winch - reputedly old English for a "ditch". Their new manager Mike Carr owned a coffee bar, which he turned into a club, 'The Sinking Ship', near Mersey Square South in Stockport and Wimple Winch became the house band. They secured a record contract with Fontana and proceeded to record a number of singles. Sadly, the singles did not do so well nationally, despite heavy local support. A disastrous fire at the club in Stockport lost them all their gear, This combined with their record contract not taken up meant the end of the band in mid 1967. * John Kelman joined the Manchester Big 3 and then Pete Maclaine and the Clan, before returning to Liverpool to live with his parents in Huyton Liverpool, where in the 70s he formed a new lineup of The Four Just Men, with 3 guys from Runcorn, Frank Garland (rhythm guitar, Mal Hoyland bass guitar and Arty Davies on drums). * Lawrence Arendes (now King) joined Sponge, a late sixties, slightly jazzy progressive rock combo, who backed Dave Berry on a 1969 single, Huma Luma). They later became into Pacific Drift, who recorded an album and single for Deram in 1970. * Dee Christopholus went on to appear in several London Stage Shows including 'Hair', 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and 'Joseph And His ...

In May 1989, a charity version of "Ferry Cross the Mersey" was released in aid of those affected by the Hillsborough disaster. The song was recorded by Liverpool artists The Christians, Holly Johnson, Paul McCartney, Gerry Marsden and Stock Aitken Waterman. The single held the #1 spot in the UK chart for three weeks. The Hillsborough Disaster was a human crush that occurred on 15 April 1989 at Hillsborough, a football stadium, the home of Sheffield Wednesday FC in Sheffield, England, resulting in the deaths of 96 people, all fans of Liverpool FC It remains the deadliest stadium-related disaster in British history and one of the worst in international football accidents that has ever occurred.[2] It was the second of two stadium-related disasters involving Liverpool supporters, the other being the Heysel Stadium Disaster in 1985. The match, an FA Cup semi-final tie between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, was abandoned seven minutes into the game. The inquiry into the disaster, the Taylor Report, named the cause as failure of police control, and resulted in the conversion of many football stadiums in the United Kingdom to all-seater and the removal of barriers at the front of stands.

The Beatles - She Loves You (Live on the Mersey Sound) [HiQ]

"She Loves You" is a song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney based on an idea by McCartney, originally recorded by The Beatles for release as a single in 1963. The single set and surpassed several records in the United Kingdom charts, and set a record in the United States by being one of the five Beatles songs which held the top five positions in the American charts simultaneously. It is The Beatles' best-selling single in the United Kingdom, and was the best selling single in Britain in 1963. "She Loves You" was credited to "Lennon/McCartney" as were all subsequent songs written by the pair and released during the remainder of the band's tenure. With the exception of the single version of "Love Me Do" and "PS I Love You", all prior songs were credited as "McCartney/Lennon". The sequence was a source of controversy when McCartney changed it to "McCartney/Lennon" for some live versions released later in his career. This was the first song by The Beatles to be heard by a substantial number of Americans; the only United States release by The Beatles that had even charted before that was "From Me to You", which lasted three weeks in August 1963, never going higher than number 116. In November 2004, Rolling Stone ranked "She Loves You" as the 64th Greatest Song of All Time. In October 2005, Uncut magazine named "She Loves You" as the third biggest song that changed the world, behind Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" and Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone".
