Merseybeat - Rory Storm and the Hurricanes
Liverpool band Rory Storm & the Hurricanes are most famous as Ringo Starr's group before he joined The Beatles. In fact, to most rock fans, that's about all they're known for. They were, however, an extremely popular Merseyside group in the early '60s that did their part to get the Liverpool scene going, and were, in fact, more popular than The Beatles themselves in 1960. Like the Beatles and some other Liverpool groups, they went to Hamburg and played challenging residencies in that city's tough clubs. But, shortly after the Beatles and Storm had cut their teeth in Hamburg, the Beatles shot past Storm and his group in popularity. And with good reason --The Beatles were better musicians and, unlike Storm and the Hurricanes, wrote their own material. Continuing to play for a few years after the Beatles poached Starr in August 1962 to replace Pete Best, the British Invasion boom almost passed Storm by, although he did get to release a couple of singles in 1963-1964.

The Merseybeats - The Things I Want to Hear (Pretty Words)
As a great fan of the Merseybeats - actually I'm a fan of all the Sixties Liverpool Groups - I bought all the CDs that were released with their material. But, recently I was took by surprise when I listened to the Viper Records CD "Unearthed Merseybeat" and saw that it included this amazing unreleased track by the Merseybeats, a cover of the Shirelles' "The Things I Want to Hear (Pretty Words), b-side of their hit "Baby it's You" (that became more associated to the Beatles). The Merseybeats version of "Pretty Words" is just fantastic. Pure Cavern/Liverpool Beat music as its best. It just became my favorite Merseybeats song of all. What is hard to understand is that this is a complete recording, with definitive vocals (not guide vocals at all) and handclap overdubs, and so why they didn't release it at the time? mystery...We heard Johnny Gustafson voice, so this recording must be from 1964 and belongs to Fontana Records (Universal). Few years ago Bear Family Records released the CD "Complete Recordings". It's a pity that they not searched the vaults to find this gem. Regards, Leonardo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
