Alkali metals in water, accurate!

For anyone who insists it is fake, www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aD6HwUE2c0 and stop giving me a headache. Watch to the end for the best (Cesium!)! A wonderful representation of the alkali metals and their accurate reactivity with water. unlike brainiac, who did infact use explosives in their episode for rubidium and cesium. Very worth a watch. Exotic Metals vs. Magnet (including uranium)

I believe this video is unique. I haven't found a video on YouTube showing so many different metals and their effect with magnets. I dream of getting all the available elemental metals and make updates for this video. Video responses with magnets versus other metals not featured in my video are more than welcome! Music by Kevin MacLeod from www.incompetech.com. Songs used: Sovereign, Atlantean Twilight and Darkness is coming. His music is free and royalty free for download which is perfect for an amateur video maker like me but I have made a fair donation since I use his music extensively in my videos. Close captions are available in English and Danish (click the CC button under the video): Hi. Welcome to my video on how magnets reacts with a lot of different elemental metals. I've made this video because a lot of people seems to know very little about how metals reacts with a magnet. I haven't been able to afford all available metals yet but will expand in the future so I can update this video. Some of the metal samples are quite small due to cost so I'll use a magnet of similar size. It's tiny but has the power to reveal any attraction to the metals. Let's start with a simple one: Iron. Iron is ferromagnetic meaning that it will not only be attracted to a magnet It can be magnetized in itself. So can nickel and cobalt. Gadolinium is actually also ferromagnetic but only below 20 degrees celsius. Above 20 degree celsius it turns strongly paramagnetic. This means it still ...

Aluminium and the Age of Flight - Metal: How It Works - BBC Four

Morea bout this programme: www.bbc.co.uk Professor Mark Miodownik reveals why aluminium became the metal that took us into the age of flight. Professor Mark Miodownik travels to Israel to trace the history of our love affair with gleaming, lustrous metal. He learns how we first extracted glinting copper from dull rock and used it to shape our world. We see how our eternal quest for lighter, stronger metals led us to forge hard, sharp steel from malleable iron and to create complex alloys in order to conquer the skies.

China to answer rare metals complaint at WTO

www.euronews.com A dispute over rare metals which has been building for years has come to a head: China has been challenged for restricting its exports. It provides 97 percent of the global output. The US, EU and Japan have fired off a formal complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The objection includes lower prices for Chinese manufacturers. Foreigners pay up to twice as much, yet cannot shop elsewhere. As in Brussels and Tokyo, the White House said Beijing must play fair. President Obama said: "American manufacturers need to have access to rare earth material which China supplies. Now, if China would simply let the market work on its own, we'd have no objection. But their policies currently are preventing that from happening, and they go against the very rules that China agreed to follow." The rare earths case is the first to be jointly filed by the European Union, the United States and Japan. Rare earths are crucial for the defence, electronics and renewable-energy industries. Beijing set an export quota of 30258 tonnes in 2011, but it shipped only 16861 tonnes last year, official data shows. Export prices over the past two years have quadrupled, encouraging buyers to shift operations to China Beijing said the complaint was unfair and that it would defend itself in the WTO, citing environmental and supply control problems. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said: "Exploiting rare earths effects the environment. China is implementing some management ...

euronews futuris - New life for old metal mines

www.euronews.com The European Union imports huge amounts of metal. Yet buried deep in Europe's bowels is a treasure trove of copper, zinc and other precious metals. Researchers have been digging deep to uncover ways to put European mining back on the map and they're not short of ideas. Europe's deepest metal mine is seemingly unfathomable, at 1430 meters. For forty years, Pyhäsalmi mine has been a rich source of copper, zinc and pyrites. However the countdown to its closure has already begun as Pihlaja, a Mining Engineer, at Pyhäsalmi mine explains: "We currently produce around 1,4 million tons of ore per year but if the metal prices stay at the current level, we won't be able to maintain the mine beyond the end of 2018". Metal mining throughout Europe is facing similar problems but scientists are becoming a regular fixture at the Pyhäsalmi Mine in an attempt to breath new life into an old industry. Juha Kaija, a Finnish Geologist talks about his research: "Metal resources exist in Europe but extracting them is socially and economically challenging. Our research aims to develop more efficient exploration methods and also at imagining new ways to re-use mining waste materials to give European metal mining a fresh new impetus". Finding new ores in active or abandoned metal mines is the researchers´first aim and that is no mean feat, especially for old, deep deposits. Timo Mäki, Chief Geologist, at Pyhäsalmi mine describes the difficulties: "Here in Finland and also in ...

Brainiac's alkali metals were FAKED!

Creative commons material at: www.youtube.com On the road I will be putting a journal up of my tour of the US on: www.thunderf00t.org So why does 7 grams of lithium release more energy than 130 g of cesium reacting with water. Well 7 g of Li and 130 g of Cs contain about the same number of nuclei. Now you could just do the experiment of dunking both of these into water, and seeing which generates the most heat. Its a little impractical due to the cost of cesium. The violence of the reaction probably wouldnt be that big of a problem. Cesium melts at almost room temperature, so you just put it in a syringe and inject it into water. However one of the nice things about chemistry is that it allows us to calculate things. In this case we can calculate the relative energy of Cs and Li dissolving in water. Li(m) + H2O = Li+(aq) +.5H2 +OH-(aq) Cs(m) + H2O = Cs+(aq) +.5H2 +OH-(aq) Well as we are doing a comparison, there are components that are energetically equivolent in both these equations so we can cancel them. Li(m) = Li+(aq) To calculate this we need to know three values, the energy to atomize the metal, the energy to strip an electron off it, and the energy to dunk that atomized ion into water at infinite dilution. Thankfully chemists are nerdy types and all these values are known. Put the numbers in and you find that Li(m) and Cs(m) reacting with water are virtually energetically identical. However in the case of equal masses of Li and Cs, the lithium will release about ...

The 'Drop Your Guard' music video production was a collaborative work by the fantastically brilliant band Metals (Christopher Coe, Candice Butler) and the undeniable awesomeness of Boxwars (Boxwars Council). Set in the fog filled Nordic highlands of tropical Victoria, to the direction of Ewan Macleod from KROZM. Boxwars provided art direction by sculpting some rock pose inducing instruments, and sexual preferentialating costumes. We'll let the video do the talking... Check out: www.boxwars.net | http www.metalsmusic.com http Boxwars is the embodiment of both art and destruction. A spark of imagination has become an enduring testament to enginuity and resourcefulness. What is Boxwars? It's been described as a network of cardboard warriors who are engaged in an epic struggle for the liberty of corrugated creativity.... or it may not have a point at all. The cardboard is our paint, the blade our brush & the battlefield is our canvas.

GATA's Bill Murphy exposes how the Gold Cartel is Bombing the Market for Precious Metals

Follow us @ twitter.com twitter.com Welcome to Capital Account. In one of his writings, a leading English art critic of the Victorian era, John Ruskin, told the story of a man who boarded a ship carrying his entire wealth in a large bag of gold coins. When a storm hit a few days into the voyage and the decision was made to abandon ship, the man strapped the bag around his waist, jumped overboard, and sank straight to the bottom of the sea. The man's body was found with the wreck of the ship many years later. Reflecting on this, Ruskin asked "Now, as he was sinking, had he the gold? Or had the gold him?" We tell you this story to impress upon you the enduring value that gold has held in the minds of people through the centuries. It has represented not only a store of value, but a means to an end...any end, including one that concludes at thebottom of the sea. For muchof Western history, gold has been synonymous with money. It was not so long ago that the United States and Europe fixed their currencies to gold, and despite the free floating currency regime that we have had since the end of Bretton Woods in the early 1970s, one could argue that we are still on a defacto gold standard. After all, gold has been rising steadily, and at times rather frenetically, since 2001, when it was trading at below 300 dollars per ounce, to levels nearing 2000 dollars in the past year. There are those, like Nouriel Roubini, who have been calling it a bubble since at least 2009. One of the ...

How to galvanize metal (for rust protection)

We show you how to galvanize metal objects to protect them rust. First we get 30g of zinc sulfate and dissolve it into 100mL of water. Zinc sulfate was made back in our video on making a copper sulfate and zinc battery: www.youtube.com Then connect the item you want to galvanize to the negative terminal of a 5 volt power supply. Connect the positive terminal to a strip of zinc metal. Zinc metal was obtained from our video on getting useful materials from batteries: www.youtube.com Immerse both electrodes into the zinc sulfate solution and keep them from touching. Then turn on the current and run it for about one minute to give the metal a zinc coating. Remove the object and now it's galvanized. To test the rust protection, place it on top of a paper towel soaked in saltwater. You should also place an unprotected item next to it for a good comparison. Cover the towel to prevent evaporation and wait a day or two. The treated object should remain rust-free, perhaps developing a white crusty coating. The untreated object should start to rust.
