Québec History 23 - Métis North-West Resistance

Québec History 23 - Métis North West Rebellion The North-West Rebellion or North-West Resistance of 1885 was a brief and unsuccessful uprising by the Métis people of the District of Saskatchewan under Louis Riel against Canada, which they believed had failed to address their concerns for the survival of their people. Despite some early victories at Duck Lake, Fish Creek and Cut Knife, the rebellion resulted in the destruction of numerous Métis and allied Aboriginal forces, and Louis Riel was hanged. Tensions between Québec and British Canada increased for some time.. The first resistance was the Red River Rebellion of 1869-1870. The provisional government established by Riel declared Manitoba a independant Métis republic. Riel was forced into exile in the United States as a result of the execution of Thomas Scott during the rebellion. Despite this, he is frequently referred to as the "Father of Manitoba". While a fugitive, he was elected three times to the Canadian House of Commons, although he never assumed his seat. During these years, he was frustrated by having to remain in exile despite his growing belief that he was a divinely chosen leader and prophet, a belief which would later resurface and influence his actions. He married in 1881 while in exile in Montana, and fathered two children. Louis Riel returned to what is now the province of Saskatchewan to represent the Métis Nation grievances to the Canadian government. This resistance escalated into a military ...

Metis Anthem

Many Metis in the Red River Area have adopted this song as their Metis Anthem song. We wish to thank the lady who originally wrote and sang it. I believe she is from Saskatchawan or Alberta. It is now sung by a very talented Metis lady by the name of Krysta Rey originally from Portage LaPrairie Manitoba. She sings this song at many as an opener at many Metis gatherings and festivals.

The Year of the Metis: Celebrating the Northern Village of Ile-a-la-Crosse

Video report by University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine students Paige Drever, Daniel Irvine and Elliot Wilkinson (Class 2013). This video was filmed in the summer of 2010 in northern Saskatchewan, celebrating Saskatchewan's Métis people, with a focus on the community of Ile-a-la-Crosse. Three University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine students spent six weeks there as part of a community service-learning program called Making the Links. This program provides students with opportunities to learn about Aboriginal health and culture, and make connections between this northern community and other global communities. The video is a compilation of many conversations, honouring the wisdom of the elders, the energy of the youth and the strength of the families. The stories of pain and healing are emotional, yet provide inspiration and hope for the future of the community of Ile-a-la-Crosse. Our hope is that this video will be shared and used as a symbol of the strength and resilience of Métis peoples.

Anthem of Métis people (Canada)

The Métis are descendants of marriages of Woodland Cree, Ojibway, Saulteaux, and Menominee aboriginals to French Canadians, Scots and English, and are one of three recognized Aboriginal peoples in Canada. Commonly pronounced /ˈmeɪtiː/ "MAY-tee" or "may-TEE" in English [3], IPA: [meˈtsɪs] in Quebec French, [meˈtis] in Standard French,[4] [mɪˈtʃɪf] in Michif, they are also historically known as Bois Brule, mixed-bloods, Countryborn (or Anglo-Métis). Their homeland consists of the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, as well as the Northwest Territories. The Métis Homeland also includes parts of the northern United States (specifically Montana, North Dakota, and northwest Minnesota).[5] Their history dates to the mid-seventeenth century. Historically, the Métis spoke or still speak either Métis French or a mixed language called Michif. Michif is a phonetic spelling of the Métis pronunciation of Métif, a variant of Métis. The Métis today predominantly speak English, with French a strong second language, as well as numerous aboriginal tongues. Métis French is best preserved in Canada, Michif in the US, notably in the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation of North-Dakota where Michif is the official language. The encouragement and use of Métis French and Michif is growing due to outreach within the provincial Métis councils after at least a generation of decline. Mountain Metis Music

The Muskeg River band has developed this promotional video about the songs that were written to describe the Forced Migration of the Mountain Metis. This took place in 1909 and 1910 from Jasper National Park. Songs were written by song writer Laura Vinson. Al Findlay is a descendant of Jacco Findlay, one of the pioneer Metis who helped the North West Company open up Canada's trade routes. Laura Vinson is descended from Tete Jaune (Yellowhead) who was also an early employee of the Hudson Bay Company. The Yellowhead Highway is named in his honour.

John Ralston Saul on Canada's Metis roots

Canada's historical roots are largely European - French - English? Wrong, says John Ralston Saul. In his new book "A Fair Country: Telling Truths about Canada", he argues that we are a Metis nation, for more aboriginal than european. He calims our history of multi- culturalism and peacekeeping reflects that heritage.

Québec History 22 - Depression and the Métis

Québec a Nation History (Part 22) Québec Depression and the Métis 1870-1885 Louis Riel (Manitoba History) Louis David Riel was a Métis politician, a founder of the province of Manitoba, and leader of the Métis people of the prairies. He led two resistance movements against the Canadian government and its Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. Riel sought to preserve Métis rights and culture as their homelands in the Northwest came progressively under the Canadian sphere of influence. This resistance escalated into a military confrontation known as the North-West Rebellion of 1885.
