Passed down from generation to generation, the skill is one that can only be done by hand. A thousand-year-old ancient art of embroidery is still shining in the mountains of northern Guizhou Province. As a folk art, it has been handed down from the hands of women of the minority Miao ethnic group. The artists are the common people of the red sect of Miao people. It is so named because of their red attire. They moved from Jiangxi Province to Guizhou hundreds of years ago. Embroidery of the red Miao people dates back to ancient times. [Ma Xiaofei, Scholar]: "All our culture, customs and embroidery art are handed down orally from generation to generation as we have no written words. All these are reflected in the embroidery." The patterns on the embroidery costumes are simple and elegant, mainly composed of three colors: red, yellow and black. Star, moon and sun patterns all come from nature or local legends. The process of making an embroidery costume is very complicated. It goes through weaving, wax coating, cross-stitching, pattern drawing, dyeing, de-waxing, bleaching and washing, all by hand.

Miao is a populous group compared with other Chinese minorities. The Thor Mountain (Lei Gong Shan in Chinese) mentioned in the lyrics is a Holy mountain of the Miao (Hmong) people, also deemed as the root or the origin of the Miao (Hmong) people. The Moon Mountain (Yue Liang Shan in Chinese) mentioned in lyrics is very close to Dong villages.
The Miao Dao (苗刀) is a Chinese two-handed dao or saber of the Republican era, with a narrow blade of up to 1.2 meters or more and a long hilt. The name means "sprout saber", presumably referring to a likeness between the weapon and a newly sprouted plant. While the miao dao is a recent weapon, the name has come to be applied to a variety of earlier varieties of long Chinese sabers, such as the zhanmadao and changdao. Along with the dadao, miao dao were used by some Chinese troops during the second Sino-Japanese War.
Song from the film Blood Drum (血鼓) and is sung by Li Gu Yi (李谷一). The Hmong name for this film is Vaj Hmoob Roj Ntsha Ntxaum Nruas. From what I've read, this movie was made around 1990 by Guangxi Film Studio. It is a great and tragic film about one of the many wars that the Hmong had fought in China and about one of our leaders Wu Ba Yia from the Qho Xiong group. The clip of this film shows the Hmong women preparing pepper spray for the upcoming battle with the Chinese. The film takes place around 200 years before the end of the Qing dynasty (1644-1912) The Manchu are now ruling over China instead of the Han Chinese. And like their predecessors, they sought to bring other minorities under their ruling, including the Hmong. Of course the Hmong won't stand for this so they rebel against the Chinese. A new Hmong leader, Li Shen Bo(?) is elected and they plan to take back one of their cities that have been taken by the Chinese by ambushing the city during the celebration of the city's Chinese governor's birthday. It was successful and they were able to hold onto the city only until more Chinese reinforcement came, out numbering the Hmong and once again the city fell. Li Shen Bo then due to shame of not being able to hold onto the city decided to pass on his power to Wu Ba Yia, who reluctantly took the power given to him. Later on, a group of Han Chinese joined up with the Hmong. A battle goes on with the Chinese invading. The Hmong fought in the mountainous regions <b>...</b>

I hope that China can keep these beautiful treasures in Guizhou,building concrete roads to the mountain area isn't always the best solution,although i can understand the opposite from these people who likes to survive in the modern society.They are very well connected seeing the many satellites,it is for the young Hmong children tempting not to break free,but when there out they will miss again their home town where many hearts belong. When we went to on of the villages we were able to see a traditional Miao dance performed. I only filmed about half of it, but I think its quite interesting to watch. And for those curious, yes, this was in Guizhou Province, China, near the city of Kaili.
Thank to a wonderful Miao historian, scholar, and mother Zhang Xiao for compiling and researching about the Miao history, culture, oral traditions, and people. Zhang Xiao was able to connect all Miao groups together using her fieldwork, secondary sources and cultural elements. This video is about "Chiyou," a heroic figure continues to be venerated to this day among all Miao groups, despite some difficulties in communication and some cultural differences between the various Miao groups. Regardless, all Miao groups recite the same rich historical migrations, wars and how they have to endure hardships. Chiyou is mentioned in all Miao groups despite all Miao groups not being able to communicate. These very crucial culture elements formed the basic Miao identity. One must take a look into the culture before making false conclusions. The Miao culture and history are very complex and complicated to compile. The Miao are one of several ethnic minorities living in the subtropical mountainous areas of southwestern China. Different groups include the Dong, Yi, Yao, Shui, Bouyi, Li, Gejia, and Bai among many others. For thousands of years, these migrating peoples have developed rich, cultural traditions and they are increasingly being recognized for their extraordinary handcrafted textiles and silver jewelry. It is the area of costume where mythology, technical skill, and cultural identity coalesce in vivid aesthetic expression. Until recently, most of these remote, ethnic villages were relatively isolated from the majority Han Chinese population. Chinas rapid modernization, however, has penetrated even the minority districts of Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi, and Guangdong provinces. The resultant economic, educational, and social changes have already begun to erode the look and use of traditional festive costumes worn by the Miao and other ethnic groups. In 1988, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts purchased eleven Miao textiles primarily as a point of contrast with the exceptional collection of Qing dynasty imperial silks owned by the museum.
