Polish-born Aleksander Michałowski was one of the oldest pianists to record. He was taught by Ignaz Moscheles (Beethoven disciple and friend of Mendelssohn and Chopin) and Carl Reinecke, followed by Carl Tausig (Liszt's greatest pupil). He later also sought advice on Chopin interpretation from Chopin's pupil Mikuli, and also from Liszt, who enthusiastically endorsed his performance of Chopin. He spent most his life as a teacher in Warsaw, with several distinguished pupils. His early recordings are the best performances, despite the primitive sound quality. This is his best-known legacy: a hair-raisingly virtuosic paraphrase of Chopin's famous 'Minute' Waltz (op.64 no.1). The recording was made in 1905.

While robots capable of kinda sorta dancing along with music are hardly anything new, few can match the moves this recently developed "Keepon" robot is capable of busting out -- without arms or legs, no less. Developed by Carnegie Mellon's Marek Michalowski and Hideki Kozima of Japan's National Institute of Communications Technology, the little yellow bot uses a gimbal-based system to move through about as full a range of motions as two spheres are capable of, and is able to react to visual stimulation in addition to music thanks to some built-in cameras. Sadly, this dancing machine remains confined to the lab for the time being.

A pupil of Carl Reinecke, Ignaz Moscheles, Carl Tausig and Karl Mikuli (Chopins pupil), Alexander Michalowski (1851-1938), spent most of his long career as a teacher at the Warsaw Conservatory where he imparted the Polish tradition of piano playing and the interpretation of Chopins music to his students. In his teaching, Michalowski emphasized the importance of contrapuntal playing and required his students to study and play the keyboard works of Bach. (Chopin revered Bach and his influence can be found throughout his music). Therefore, it should not come as a surprise that one of Michalowskis most famous pupils was Wanda Landowska. Other important students included Henrich Neuhaus, Micha Levtski and Vladimir Sofronitsky Syrena-Electro 6571, recorded circa 1930.

The Polish pianist and composer Aleksander Michałowski (1851-1938) had a really remarkable musical education - studying piano with, inter alia, Moscheles, Reinecke, Tausig, Chopin's pupil Mikuli, and Liszt. From 1870 he was based in Warsaw, where he taught piano privately and later at conservatories. He also made gramophone recordings, including some made in the 1930s. According to the Wikipedia article on him, he only wrote around 35 piano works.
