On July 30th of 2009, former Houston City Council member Michael Berry decided to be the ONE media voice to stand behind firefighters and not jump on the feeding frenzy that had been occurring. Mr. Berry wrote this song to show firemen that not everyone is buying into the lies that are being told about our department. Berry recognized that all was not as it seemed and as the investigations into alleged racist and sexist acts come to a close, it is becoming more and more apparent that at least one of the victims (the one who started this snowball) likely fabricated the entire incident. Regardless of who the perpetrator was, the fact remains racism/sexism is the product of ignorance regardless of the gender, ethnicity, or city council position of the source. Furthermore, acting on that ignorance, fabricating racism, or grandstanding at the expense of the entire department for 15 seconds of fame is deplorable and should result in dismissal from employment, even if in an elected position. The media has spent months pointing out that racist and sexist statements were written on a fire station locker, yet barely 30 seconds were spent pointing out the three African Americans that HFD firefighters pulled out of a burning building, or that the ELECTED president of the ONLY HFD union is black! Read between the lines. Read between the bars of racism that are being used to skew reality. The Houston Fire Department is NOT a racist organization.
