I counted 72 pin holes in my rear tyre (most were very tiny) after riding about 60kl on a dirt and stony road. Can't believe I made it another 250kl home but tyre went flat over night causing bike to fall over and land against my car snapping off the front brake reservoir and fracturing the fairing and its support frame, in all just over $1000 damage to the bike. Tyre had done a total of about 6000 hard klms and was definitely ready to be replaced.

Quick video of me pre/post ride ritual. This is in a nutshell what I do to give meself piece of mind that me bike and gear are in tip top shape before a canyon ride. The order may be mixed up and some things done prior to and some done after a previous ride....but all this gets done before any canyon ride takes place. Neurotic?... OCDish?... Neat Freakish?.....possibly. But it has been working for me. Steps: Check the weather the day before and day of the ride (as this impacts the ride and the adjustments to the bikes). Check tires and air to the appropriate psi for that day and the type of riding we expect to do. Check/adjust the suspension, if needed. Check/adjust the chain slack. Check all fluids and inspect for leaks. Check brakes and lights. Check bike for loose fasteners while cleaning the entire bike. Clean and check all gear. Check/clean camera's and mounts. Charge camera's if necessary. Get a good nights sleep (most of the time, wink wink). Get R canyon boogie on =) Aforementioned items are not necessarily in order.
