Originally published in the CrossFit Journal (journal.crossfit.com) on July 21, 2009. There is more to a Mike Burgener Olympic weightlifting seminar than shouts of "Yeah, burpees!" and "Yes, coach!" Throughout the weekend, Coach Burgener will periodically call a halt to the small group work to highlight a problem he's seeing or to make sure everyone hears his answer to a question. Coach Burgener calls these interruptions "coaching points." This video from Again Faster features three coaching points taken from a seminar held March 7-8, 2009 at CrossFit Old Town in Alexandria, Va. The first coaching point concerns the importance of vertical hip thrust in the snatch. The movement should not be confused with the horizontal hip thrust seen in the kettlebell swing. Coaches should look for the down and up motion that creates the jump. The second coaching point is about breathing. Coaches should ensure their trainees take deep belly breaths, squat, come back up and then let the breath out. Weightlifting belts are not advisable at low weights. The third and final coaching point is about wrist flexibility. It isn't unusual for people to have tight wrists, but becoming more flexible is important because of adjustments required going from the front squat to the jerk. Coach Burgener demonstrates a wrist flexibility drill with two very different trainees.

The snatch might be one of the more complex athletic movements, but Coach Mike Burgener has developed a teaching progression that works for schoolchildren and elite athletes alike. In this case, Coach B is working with Owen Franks of the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team at Mike's Gym in Bonsall, Calif. Like many top athletes, Franks is a big, strong guy, but his best clean is 50 kg more than his best snatch, indicating to Coach Burgener that Franks needs to get faster—and the snatch is the best way to train for explosive power. Burg starts the process where he always does: the Burgener Warm-Up with PVC, which is a great way to train parts of the complete movement while learning to put speed on the bar through explosive hip extension. From there, Franks moves through several skill-transfer exercises before picking up a 15-kg training bar for more drills. Unflappable as always, Burg's dogs hang out in the background while the master teaches.

After introducing New Zealand All Blacks rugby player Owen Franks to the Burgener Warm-Up, Mike Burgener takes him through high-hang snatches at Mike's Gym in Bonsall, Calif. Starting at the top and working down to the floor, Coach B has Franks work the high-hang position. Focusing the athlete, Burgener gives him a goal for the session: keeping his chest up and his weight back on his heels. Working from the high hang allows Burgener to fine-tune the mechanics of the second and third pulls, as well as the bottom position. Franks is strong and powerful, and his pulls look good—his weakness is in the bottom. With the chink in the armor identified, Burg knows where to go next: overhead squats and snatch balances.

After introducing New Zealand All Blacks rugby player Owen Franks to the Burgener Warm-Up and some snatch position drills, Mike Burgener takes him through several weighted skill-transfer exercises at Mike's Gym in Bonsall, Calif. Franks is very strong and can overhead-squat well over 200 lb., but Burg wants to test him with the snatch balance. Ideally, you want your snatch balance to be 20-25 kg more than your snatch, and Burgener firmly believes that increases in the snatch balance transfer to increases in the full movement. "The confidence in the speed that is generated there, and the speed strength that is generated there, has a direct relationship to how much I can snatch," Burgener says. Taking Franks 5 kg above his max snatch reveals a lot to Coach B and gives Franks new tools to use to improve his bottom position—and his snatch numbers.
