Taking the first initial of their respective surnames, they named the label W&C, and put together an awesome band built around Hux Brown a guitarist whose skills matched those of the mighty Lyn Taitt and Gladstone Anderson on vocals and piano, and recorded a few singles to their backing. The label was short-lived, but all of the tracks they recorded were pure gold, including the massive tunes I Wanna Love You and Once Upon a Time, beloved of so many reggae singers. This release features 2 songs from this label that are highly sought after and regarded among collectors, and which were only ever pressed in Jamaica. Sondheim - The Boy From... (Sung By Millicent Martin)
This lesser known song was composed by Mary Rodgers in 1966 with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim under the name Esteban Ria Nido. It was introduced by Linda Lavin in the MAD Magazine revue "The Mad Show" and was meant to be a send up of the 60's Bossa Nova standard "The Girl From Impanema." Lavin did a wonderful recording of the song on an original cast album, but I personally prefer this rendition by Millicent Martin, from the original cast recording of "Side By Side By Sondheim," released in 1976 on RCA records. The image is an alternate cover from the UK release of the album, using a fuschia background and purple border rather than the usual blue border and white background. All rights held under SME, used respectively for entertainment purposes. No copyright infringement intended.
