In this 1961 performance, fifty-seven year old Nathan Milstein (1904-1992) performs the Tchaikovsky violin concerto in D major, Op. 35. William Steinberg leads the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. I created this video from theextremely rare LP shown above (4:12), issued in 1962 on the Angel label, serial number 35686. So that there is no question in the mind of those as to the provenance of the recording to which they are listening, I rely principally on images of the LP (side 1, 4:12; side 2, 24:16) and LP jacket (front, 4:48; reverse, 29:06) in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these. 1. violin-Sarah Chang [10 years old] (born:1980) Chopin-Nocturne (Milstein) SarahChang was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her father, Min-Soo Chang, is a violinist and music teacher. Her mother, Myoung Jun, is a composer.[3] Sarah Chang's parents moved to the United States from South Korea in 1979 for her father's advanced music degree at Temple University. Her mother took composition classes at the University of Pennsylvania. Chang has said that although she "never actually lived in Korea... I do still feel very strongly it's where my roots are." She has a brother, who is seven years younger, Michael. In a 1998 interview to PBS, S.Chang explained that he is an avid tennis player and is thus often mistaken for being Michael Chang, an athlete with the same given name who the family have no relations to. Her father has settled back to Korea, while her brother graduated from Princeton University in 2010. In 1987, when Sarah Chang was 6 years old, she eventually auditioned for and was accepted to the Juilliard School by performing the Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor. Chang spent her weekends attending music classes at Juilliard and shopping in New York City with her parents. twitter.com Nathan Mironovich Milstein (January 13, 1904 [OS December 31, 1903] -- December 21, 1992) was a Russian-born American virtuoso violinist. Widely considered one of the finest violinists of the 20th century, Milstein was known for his interpretations of Bach's solo violin works and for works from the Romantic period. He was also known for his long career: he performed at a high level into his mid 80s, retiring only after suffering a broken hand. He was born in Odessa, then part of the Russian Empire (now in Ukraine), the fourth child of seven, to a middle-class Jewish family with virtually no musical background. It was a concert by the 11-year-old Jascha Heifetz that inspired his parents to make a violinist out of Milstein. As a child (of seven years old), he started violin studies (as suggested by his parents, to keep out of mischief) with the eminent violin pedagogue Pyotr Stolyarsky, also the teacher of renowned violinist David Oistrakh. When Milstein was 11, Leopold Auer invited him to become one of his students at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Milstein reminisced: Every little boy who had the dream of playing better than the other boy wanted to go to Auer. He was a very gifted man and a good teacher. I used to go to the Conservatory twice a week for classes. I played every lesson with forty or fifty people sitting and listening. Two pianos were in the classroom and a pianist accompanied us.
