The country is still in some political turmoil and a long-running communist insurgence has led to allegations of illegal killings by the army. Simon meets a general known as 'The Butcher'. Simon also has a surreal encounter from the past - an interview with Imelda Marcos, who is marketing a new line in beauty products. www.sendongrelief.org Donate to the Philippine Red Cross- www.redcross.org.ph At least 436 people are dead after Tropical Storm Sendong pummeled the Philippines, Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang said Saturday. The vast majority of the bodies were found in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, according to military officials and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Five people were killed in a landslide, but all others died in flash flooding. The provinces of Compostela Valley and Zamboanga del Norte were also hit, added Benito Ramos, chairman of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. About 400 people remain missing after the storm, which is called Sendong locally. More than 2000 have been rescued, the country's military reported. Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said officials are investigating reports that an entire village was swept away. Authorities have also begun distributing food rations for some 10000 families affected by the storm, while also handing out thousands of blankets and mosquito nets, the Red Cross reported Saturday. Flash flooding overnight -- following 10 hours of rain -- fueled the devastation, compounded by overflowing rivers and tributaries. As much as 20 centimeters (8 inches) of rain fell within 24 hours in some areas. Ramos said despite government warning, some did not evacuate. An estimated 100000 people are displaced, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development. At least ...

Great flood in Rio Grande de Mindanao - Clearing operation at Delta Bridge,Cotabato City

Delta Bridge in Cotabato City needs urgent declogging operation before the entire city will submerge in water that spilled from the Rio Grande de Mindanao due to gigantic accumulation of drifted aquatic plants and soil at the foot of the bridge. Dredging machines are no match with the huge dirt and trash. They progressed slowly and even got stalled. I wonder what those military hovercrafts are doing. It looks like they are just toying around these big toys. What will happen to the aquatic plants that drifted into the sea? Will they just disappear or create another big problem? Noted typos: at the end of the video I misspelled "dredge" with "dridge" and "rainy" with "rainny." My oversight. Copyright by Edgie Polistico - ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. In Search of the Mindanao Sun

When our small band of pilgrims decided to journey to Northern Mindanao before the end of the year since four months ago, we had no idea of the flood that would take place in Cagayan de Oro just four days before we had to leave. It took us one day to decide to adjust to the demands of the situation and to then mobilize what was in our power to assist in what way we could. We had no contacts save for our few friends who weren't living in CDO anymore. It was a matter of leveling our expectations, staying within vision and being fueled by inspiration that we could allow things to just unfold and self-organize itself as we made our way closer to the intimidating crowded and busy relief centers. Vision: When I walked around Mindanao seven years ago, I had but a general spiritual intent to find myself. What I chanced upon was a Birth Vision of Mindanao, of the Philippines, the planet and of myself and humanity. We are here for a purpose. It might be constantly changing, even on a soul level, but we are within this world to create it, experience it on the perception of our true nature. Love, Light and Energy. Mindanao is key to this. Not only is it capable of producing food that would make it resilient to the challenges global crises like climate change and peak oil brings to us, its people are also just as resilient. The Life Force here is innately obvious and one needs just to spend a few days here with clear and soulful intent to remember what it is we are truly doing on this ...
