The "King of the Surf Guitar!" Great tone and live on TV! Notice that Dick is left-handed, plays a left-handed guitar, but strings the guitar as if it were right-handed! The string-order is reversed! Dick Dale and the Del-Tones - Misirlou, surf rock history

Dick Dale and the Del-Tones and Misrilou made the History of Surf Rock with a massive dose of reverb, although Misrilou (Μισιρλού in greek girl from Misri, where Misri is meaning Egypt coming from Arab via Turkey) was originally a Greek traditional rebetiko (a style that originated with the Greek refugees from Turkey) song composed around 1920, it can be considered one of the mile stones of surf rock together with Wipeout, Pipeline Surfin Bird and some proto-surf by Link Wray, partly also cuz of the revival lounched by Quentin Trantino's movie Pulp Fiction. Southern California ca. 1960 was a melting-pot of many strains of musical thought. Rock and Roll music was popular, with instrumental rockers such as Duane Eddy, Link Wray, and Santo and Johnny proving that strong vocal ability was unnecessary to achieve a level of stardom. Los Angeles was a hub of Jazz activity, and the biggest acts typically played there. Unlike much of the US at the time, large numbers of Mexicans lived in this part of California, and their music was no doubt heard by many aspiring musicians of the era. Rock instrumentation, with an aggressive jazz-influenced drummer and some Latin influences equals Surf music. It merely required a few local talents to achieve a level of popularity before a trend was born. Most Early surf bands were formed in Southern California area, with groups such as Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, the Challengers, Eddie & the Showmen and the Surfaris. Easily the ultimate version of Dick Dale's classic, Bobby's guitar shreds like no other and trumps Dick's original. The Beach Boy's version played by studio musicians Glenn Cambell, Leon Russell and Hal Blaine comes in a close third.

Misirlou - Pulp Fiction - Mario Paint

My second completed work in Mario Paint Composer. It took quite some time to compose out the notes (probably some 16-20 hours, including goofing off here and there) and probably another 2-3 total hours of editing (lots of snipping and stretching the clips.) With a song as fast as Misirlou, you can only fit so much in 96 measures. You'd be surprized how much trouble it can be to synch up the separate recordings just right. D: Anyway, the editing was a pain, but it was still a lot of fun to make this, and I hope you enjoy it! Software used: Music: Mario Paint Composer - www.unfungames.com Notation: MidiNotate Player - www.notation.com Video: Camstudio 2.0 - camstudio.org Editing: Windows Movie Maker Extra thanks: Axelrod777 for putting the aforementioned links on his Mario Paint vids and also for helping me with all of my silly questions when I was getting started. I don't take requests, but suggestions are always welcome. Thanks for watching!

Μιχάλης Πατρινός - MIKE PATRINOS Μουσουρλού / MISIRLOU (Original, 1930)

Famous "Misirlou" is an old greek rebetiko song....this is the original version from Mike Patrinos from 1930. The word Misirli in turkish means girl from Egypt. The song refers to a cross-faith, cross-race, relationship, a risqué subject at its time. Enjoy!!! Anita Darian: Misirlou

Here is an extract of another ultra-rare record, "East of the Sun", by the "Armenian Yma Sumac", Anita Darian. Anita Darian has been a serious working singer for nearly 50 years. She's worked in everything from opera and classical recitals to television jingles and cartoon voice-overs. She has a classically-trained voice with a four-octave range, which has enabled her to take on some remarkable jobs over the years. She sang on a number of albums of Broadway musicals, including "The King and I" and "Show Boat" for Columbia Records. She sang and played the kazoo at a performance of Mark Bucci's "Kazoo Concerto" at one of Leonard Bernstein's famous Young Peoples' concerts with the New York Philharmonic, which later earned her a part in the recording of John Corigliano's eccentric take-off, titled "The Naked Carmen", on the original Bizet opera. And hundreds of millions of listeners have heard her demonstrate her vocal range without knowing it, because she provided the swooping counter-melody behind the tenor lead on the Tokens' #1 hit, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", a cover of a South African song written by Solomon Linda. "East of the Sun", recorded in 1960 with Frank Hunter handling the arrangements, is a collection of genuine and ersatz Near/Middle Eastern songs such as "Misirlou" and "Gomen Nasir". It's a treat to hear the rare vocal version of "Misirlou", but Darian's style is operatic rather than exotic. She obviously had the capacity to go the Yma Sumac route, but she ...

Pulp Fiction (1994) is an American crime film directed by Quentin Tarantino The film is known for its rich, eclectic dialogue, ironic mix of humor and violence, nonlinear storyline, and host of cinematic allusions and pop culture references. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture; Tarantino and Avary won for Best Original Screenplay. It was also awarded the Palme d'Or at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. A major critical and commercial success, it revitalized the career of its leading man, John Travolta, who received an Academy Award nomination, as did costars Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman. NOTE: I do not own this material, all songs belong to their legal and rightful owners. I have uploaded this music for educational purposes. Arab women singers - dancing to Misirlou ميريام فارس/هيفاء وهبي/مصر رقص

Video clips of popular Lebanese and Egyptian singers -- Myriam Fares, Sherine, Haifa Wehbe and Ruby -- dancing to the song "Misirlou" played by Dick Dale & his band in 1962. This recording was used in the movie "Pulp Fiction" (1994). Dick Dale is a Lebanese-American whose birth name was Richard Mansour. In Greek, "Misirlou" means an "Egyptian girl." The word "misirlou" comes from the Turkish word "mısırlı" which comes from the Arabic word for Egypt, "Masr." This song is an old Greek tune that was turned into a surf guitar hit by Dick Dale in the early 1960s. The origin of the melody is uncertain, but it may have derived from a Turkish or Arabic folk song. Dick Dale restyled it and played it "insanely fast" on electric guitar. Misirlou is Greek (Μισιρλού, "Egyptian Girl") from Turkish "mısırlı" ("Egyptian") from the Arabic word "Miṣr" ( مصر "Egypt") How Dick Dale turned a Middle Eastern song into a surf guitar classic: www.america.gov Here's a video of Dick Dale & The Del Tones playing "Misirlou" in 1963: www.youtube.com Here is Greek singer Anna Vissi belting out a stirring rendition of "Misirlou" at the Athens Olympics in 2004: www.youtube.com "Masr" is Arabic for "Egypt," which is the origin of the word "misirlou." According to one music writer, "The vaguely Middle Eastern sound of all surf music is directly attributable to Dale's Arabic ancestry; and Dale's brilliant rendition of Misirlou ensured that it would become the surf anthem.
