A glorious morning in crowded Aizawl, Mizoram

A glorious morning in crowded Aizawl, Mizoram, India. One can barely imagine that this concretized vertical state capital occupying every square inch of hillside space is that of Aizawl! Some of the buildings appear to be seven and eight storeys tall... One wonders if a proper earthquake analysis has been done in the region prior to allowing such unbridled construction! See the big cross on the hill-top and the sound of buses screeching to a halt at the bus-stop. The capital state as well as the largest city of Mizoram is Aizawl; the center of all important government offices, state assembly house and civil secretariat.Aizawl is also the main religious and cultural centers of the Mizos, the ethnic tribe of Mizoram. The city lies just north of the Tropic of cancer and is located at 3715 feet from the sea level. A birds eye view of the city will sure catch the attention of the beholder. Some of the notable places once you get to Aizawl city are Mizoram State Museum, Durtlang Hills, Mini Zoo, Bara Bazar, Luangmual Handicarfts Centre and Berawtlang Tourist Complex. Apart from these tourist sites, the nearby tourist attractions are Bung, Paikhai, Tamdil lake, Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary, Kolasib, Vantawng waterfalls, Champhai, Phawngpui, Saiha and Lunglei. courtesy: mizoram.nic.in Thisfootage is part of the professionally-shot broadcast stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of imagery from South Asia. Giant earthworm in Mizoram!

Ever seen an earthworm resembling a snake in shape, size and as big as this one? Check this out! Here's one huge earthworm found crawling on a village road in Mizoram. Villagers seem to clap to make it move, but I suspect they are not aware that an earthwork doesn't exactly have hearing, but senses movements and vibrations more... According to : en.wikipedia.org Earthworm is the common name for the largest members of Oligochaeta (which is either a class or subclass depending on the author) in the phylum Annelida. In classical systems they were placed in the order Opisthopora, on the basis of the male pores opening posterior to the female pores, even though the internal male segments are anterior to the female. Theoretical cladistic studies have placed them instead in the suborder Lumbricina of the order Haplotaxida, but this may again soon change. Folk names for the earthworm include "dew-worm", "Rainworm", "night crawler" and "angleworm" (due to its use as fishing bait). Earthworms are also called megadriles (or big worms), as opposed to the microdriles (or small worms) in the families Tubificidae, Lumbriculidae, and Enchytraeidae, among others. The megadriles are characterized by having a distinct clitellum (which is much more obvious than the single-layered one of the microdriles) and a vascular system with true capillaries. Wondrous Kolasib Wonderful People - Mizoram, NE India

Kolasib is a wondrous city built high on the side of the mountain, in Mizoram, a Northeastern State of India, between Bangladesh and Myanmar (Burma). Its people are wonderful, peaceful and happy in their family and community life together. It is amazing how they build their homes perched on timber columns on the steep mountainside. They speak the Mizo language as you will hear in this video. They eat a wholesome mix of foods, which are very tasty, as you will see. There are many christians in Kolasib, who look forward to Jesus Christ's return and the setting up of God's Government on this Earth.

Mizoram food crisis in 2008 - news coverage

What was a natural phenomena turned into a food crisis in Mizoram in 2008. An acute food shortage in pockets of Mizoram adjoining borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh was a result of flowering of the bamboo resulting in an explosion of rat population. The full story below: It evokes images of the legend of the Pied Piper of Hamlin, but for the tribal villagers living on the land that has been overrun by rats, it is time of hunger, disease and anxiety. Hundreds of families in far-flung areas of Mizoram, in the northeastern region of India are facing food shortages. Some are barely eking out one meal a day. Crops including rice, maize and vegetables have been wiped out as flowering of bamboo in the region caused an explosion of rodent population. "All our crops were eaten by the rats. We couldn't save anything," says Binondo, who lives with eight family members in Bawngva village, Mamit district. Relief too slow Supplies are reaching villagers at an achingly slow pace due to inaccessible terrain and short supply of food grains within Mizoram. An ActionAid assessment team reported in March that 80000 to 100000 people in the state are going hungry. "There are clear signs of a crisis unfolding. Reports of acute food shortages in pockets adjoining borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh are coming in. "Villages in Lawngtlai district are in a particularly bad shape, with people surviving by foraging in the forest since October last year," says Mrinal Gohain, Regional Manager North ...
