Henry Mancini was a significant writer for films who used the flavor of jazz in some of his movie scores. This 1997 CD reissue brings back one of his few jazz-oriented projects, a salute of sorts to the idea of the swing combo. Mancini gathered an impressive cast of top players consisting of trumpeter Pete Candoli, trombonist Dick Nash, Ted Nash on alto and flute, Art Pepper (sticking exclusively to clarinet), baritonist Ronnie Lang, pianist Johnny Williams (doubling on harpsichord), guitarist Bob Bain, bassist Rolly Bundock, drummer Shelly Manne, Ramon Rivera on conga, and Larry Bunker on vibes and marimba. Some of the dozen selections are relatively straight-ahead, while a few (particularly "A Powdered Wig" and "Scandinavian Shuffle") are a bit corny, especially in their use of harpsichord and marimba. There are a few strong moments (particularly from Candoli and Pepper) on such numbers as "Moanin'," "Sidewalks of Cuba," "Castle Rock," and "Everybody Blow," but the end results are not too essential. Overall, this is a compromise between creative jazz and tightly controlled music meant for a larger audience. A historical curiosity. ~ Scott Yanow Recorded at RCA Victor's Music Center Of The World, Hollywood, California in June 1960. Personnel: Bob Bain (guitar, bass guitar); Ted Nash (flute, alto saxophone); Ronnie Lang (alto flute, baritone saxophone); Art Pepper (clarinet); Pete Candoli (trumpet); Dick Nash (trombone); Johnny Williams (piano, harpsichord); Larry Bunker ...

Ray Manzarek & the UCLA Trio - Moanin'

Ray was a well established musician before his fateful meeting with Jim and a couple of decent examples of his work surprisingly survived. The earliest is from the Lighthouse Jazz Club(UCLA) Los Angeles, California from March 29th, 1961 and strongly captures his UCLA Trio's musical roots, firmly placed in jazz. The line up consisted of Ray on piano, John Halliberton on bass and Sam Beale on drums both were fellow students at UCLA The tape is about half an hour long and features Moaning, Sigmund Romberg's Softly (As In The Morning Sunrise), Joey, Ikin Retnin a Ray original & Thelonious Monk's 'Round Midnight which give a good idea of Ray's influences. The set is damn good and its plain that Ray has a good stage prescence when he performs and a confidence that served him well a few years later.....and the guy has always been a decent singer. So what else do we know about this combo? Did they do regular gigs in clubs around the LA area......are there any photos apart from the one on the booklet from Ray's Myth & reality album. Be nice to know a bit more about Ray and his early jazz excursions...... - Info by TheWallsScreamedPoetry from the official Ray Manzarek Forums -

I was hooked on Davy Graham's version of "Moanin'" from the "Folk, Blues & Beyond" album from when it first came out over 40 years ago. This is not a copy of his version but certainly nods to it! It's a Bobby Timmons composition, by the way. www.mjra.net Ifyou like DIY music and good companionship, why not take a look at the "Front Porch" discussion board. Annette Hanshaw - Moanin' Low (1929)

Annette Hanshaw (October 18, 1901 - March 13, 1985) was one of the first great female jazz singers. In the late 1920s she ranked alongside Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith and the Boswell Sisters. Her singing style was relaxed and suited the new jazz-influenced pop music of the late 1920s. Although she had a low opinion of her own singing, she continues to have fans because of how she combined the voice of an ingenue with the spirit of a flapper. Annette Hanshaw - Moanin' Low (1929)

Moanin' -- jazz piano

I listened to a CD by Eldar Djangirov recently which had this tune on it. I really liked how he approached it. He would go big, then go small, then go big again. He plays it with a happy Oscar Peterson vibe. I thought it would be fun to copy his approach. I didn't copy his notes, but I tried to get the same feel and same musical arcs. This was a lot of fun to do. It was a bit of a stretch because it is different than my usual style. It also gave me the opportunity to explore GarageBand a little bit more. The backing tracks were done before I recorded the piano track. I used GarageBand and Synthogy Ivory Steinway piano patch. The keyboard is a Yamaha CP300. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed doing this.
