What is MongoDB? | MongoDB
MongoDB is an open source, document-oriented database designed with both scalability and developer agility in mind. Instead of storing your data in tables and rows as you would with a relational database, in MongoDB you store JSON-like documents with dynamic schemas. The goal of MongoDB is to bridge the gap between key-value stores (which are fast and scalable) and relational databases (which have rich functionality). Using BSON (binary JSON), developers can easily map to modern object-oriented languages without a complicated ORM layer. This new data model simplifies coding significantly, and also improves performance by grouping relevant data together internally. MongoDB was created by former DoubleClick Founder and CTO Dwight Merriman and former DoubleClick engineer and ShopWiki Founder and CTO Eliot Horowitz. They drew upon their experiences building large scale, high availability, robust systems to create a new kind of database. MongoDB maintains many of the great features of a relational database -- like indexes and dynamic queries. But by changing the data model from relational to document-oriented, you gain many advantages, including greater agility through flexible schemas and easier horizontal scalability. Mongo Santamaria "Mambo Mongo" (1975)
Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría Rodríguez (April 7, 1917 in Havana, Cuba -- February 1, 2003) was an Afro-Cuban Latin jazz percussionist. He is most famous for being the composer of the jazz standard "Afro Blue," recorded by John Coltrane among others. In 1950 he moved to New York where he played with Perez Prado, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, Fania All Stars, etc. He was an integral figure in the fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with R&B and soul, paving the way for the boogaloo era of the late 1960s. His 1963 hit rendition of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.

Possibly it was the fact that Mongo never became boring that kept him in the public imagination. The most prevalent story by far was that Hodges had taken out insurance against the loss of his mental faculties. He then pretended to be insane. The insurance company paid off in the millions, but in order to keep the money Prince Mongo must continue to come across as, at least, eccentric. The second urban legend is that Hodges' brother is filthy rich and gives him whatever he wants. The idea that Robert Hodges himself may have inherited money has never been explored in my presence and I don't know the answer to that question.

Born Guadalupe Victoria Yolí Raymond on December 23, 1939 in the barrio of San Pedrito, Santiago, Cuba. Her father was an worker at the local Bacardi distillery and was a major influence on her life and he strictly encouraged her to becme a school teacher. Just like her closest counterpart, Celia Cruz, she too was a schoolteacher before she became a singer. She married in 1958 and formed a musical trio with her husband Eulogio "Yoyo" Reyes and another female singer. This group "The Tropicuba Trio" broke up with the marriage in 1960. She began to perform her own act at a small night club "La Red" in Havana and acquired a devoted following also appearing on radio. She released her first album "Con el Diablo en el Cuerpo" ("With the Devil Inside") on Discuba in 1961. Her expressive performances with their violent sexuality attracted criticism that she was a poor example to the revolutionary state, this led to professional difficulties which together with personal problems made it difficult to stay in Cuba. In 1962 she found herself exiled to the United States. In New York City she performed at a cabaret, named "La Barraca", where she was discovered by Mongo Santamaria and started a new career, making more than 10 records in five years. Her passionate performances covered the range of Cuban music: son montuno, bolero, Guantanamera venturing into other Caribbean styles like merengue, boogaloo, golpe tocuyano, busamba, salsa. MongoDB is a popular non-relational database that uses JSON documents as the data model. It was developed for cloud environments and as one of the original data services supported on Cloud Foundry it's a good choice for your cloud data service needs. Cloud Foundry is an open source project sponsored by VMware. It's a multi-language, multi-framework, and multi-deployment cloud. It lets developers focus on what is really important -- their applications. Spring based applications are perfectly suited for Cloud Foundry which provides a set of tools to make developing and deploying these applications a simple task. The Spring Data project makes it easier to build Spring-powered applications that use new data access technologies such as non-relational NOSQL databases. One of the supported databases is the MongoDB document database. In this webinar, we show what the combination of MongoDB and Cloud Foundry has to offer to Spring developers. We develop a sample applications, show how to build and deploy it to the cloud. We also show how to connect to the MongoDB service bound to the application in the cloud. This provides the ability to import and export data and to run ad-hoc queries from a command line tool. After 60 minutes, you will be ready to develop and deploy your own Spring applications using MongoDB to the cloud.
