After grabbing our baggage and a quick lunch it was off to Legendary Patchwerk Studios to begin the live session with Shady Records recording Artist Yelawolf. Admiring the multiple platinum plaques and overall history of the studio made for quite the backdrop as The Mekanics entered the studio and anticipated the session. As soon as Yelawolf walked in the session he was focused on business and was ready to hear some dope tracks. The Mekanics started to bang out beats off their tracklist and Yelawolf's creativity went to work immediately. After the listening & writing session, it was time to hit the booth. Team members Brian Collins and Troy Herbst came from the middle of the field and drove spectacularly in challenging conditions, and their determination paid off as they completed the 1061.69-mile race distance down the Baja peninsula in 20 hours, 49 minutes and 39 seconds, averaging 50.94 mph over the most treacherous terrain in all of motor racing.With a rich legacy in off-road racing that includes back-to-back Baja 1000 wins in 2004 and 2005, Herbst Motorsports was fully prepared to add another win in the legendary race. The team was under the gun right from the start, however, as unfavorable starting positions meant that the drivers of both entries would have their work cut out for them. Dirt Shark gives us a sexy but classy look at the new Monster Energy Supercross Girls for 2012.
What began as a relatively calm morning in the southern California foothills just outside San Diego literally became the stuff Guinness Book of World Records are made of when Monster Energys Johnny Greaves came roaring down a dirt road at 105 mile per hour and launched his 3800-pound, 800-horsepower TORC off-road PRO 2WD Toyota through the air over the length of an NFL football field. Landing quite peacefully some 301-feet later despite the overall violent nature of the jump. Greaves looped back around and was met by his Monster Energy/Toyota Motorsports team and off-road racing teammate McGrath. He made it look good, made it look easy. But that jump was frickin huge, said McGrath. With a spectrum of measuring and surveying equipment on hand, Greaves added more than 100 feet to the previous 2WD distance truck jumping record of 193-feet set last year. I was a little bit nervous, Greaves admitted the day of the jump. I woke up and I was going to go ride down there and look at the ramp and talk about what we need to do, but my brother was already in Jeremys horse barn tearing the truck apart and getting the gearing right and I was like, All right, its on! With a gap of 200 feet (between the take-off and landing peaks), Greaves knew anything below 100 mph on the in-run would cause him to auger into the face of the landing. It was a big test for the team, and something that team riders Billy Mackenzie, Dean Ferris and Phil Nicoletti have been training hard for. Team sponsor Unit Clothing followed closely behind to document the weekend, as the brand new truck rolled into Broadford, bikes were prepped and riders took to the track. In the end it was Billy Mackenzie who would score the team their first win of the season, taking out the Pro Opens class. Team mates Phil Nicolleti in the Lites and Dean Ferris in the Opens had good results too, but some small mistakes and stumbles would hold them back in 5th and 6th place respectively. With five candy colored MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles and a 96-man man team, the Monster Energy X-raid outfit turned sand to glass at Dakar Stage 1 with the mighty squad claiming 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 11th and 13th overall! Although the likelihood of a Mini win was obvious, just which car and driver it would be was up to conjecture, luck and skill it would be was suspect. However, when all was said and done, Leonid Novitskiy exploited his best driving skills to seize his first special stage win at the Dakar. The 2011 Rally Raid World Champion started 13th and took the measure of his teammates Krzysztof Holowzyc and Stéphane Peterhansel at the finish line.

It's no secret that Mark Healey is a thrill seeker. He paddles into and gets barreled on 25-foot waves. He skydives. He has voluntarily, on an island off the coast of Mexico, ridden great white sharks — just grabbed onto their dorsal fins and got towed. So with all of these erratic behaviors, it's easy for us to label Mark as foolish. Dangerous. Oh, Healey? That guy's got a screw loose. But when you hear him talk about diving and sharks in this three-minute clip, you hear someone who is thoughtful, calculated and self-aware. "I have a super busy mind," says Mark, "and the only way for me to really have a moment where I'm just being — I'm not thinking, I'm not turning my wheels — is holding my breath, surrounded by water." Still, it's a bit unnerving watching Mark swim with and pet bull sharks at the bottom of the ocean. Then again, he's spent enough time with sharks to know them, to get past those sinister faces. "What I learn from sharks is don't judge a book by its cover," explains Mark. "Sharks can't change their facial expression. They tell you what they want you to know with their bodies. They always look mean to most people." So maybe the same way we were wrong about Mark being foolish, we were wrong about sharks being mean? Maybe. Why don't you go jump in and find out?
