Montreal students occupy University of Quebec

the video courtesy MontrealManif www.youtube.com The Quebec government announced it would suspend the current semester for many college and university students after around one hundred protesters marched through the hallways of the Université du Québec in Montreal Wednesday morning expressing their anger over the rise of the tution fees. The striking students forced the cancellation of some classes. Some protesters broke into the classrooms and grabbed the students by an arm telling them to get out. None of the protesters reportedly were carrying guns, neither anyone has been arrested. The several weeks long stand-off has created considerable social disorder. Montreal Protesters Push Back Riot Cops, Provocateurs Act Up

The protest last night was massive but had a vibe of peace and solidarity to it. Just before I left, a couple of people smashed a window with rocks, but I suspect they were provocateurs based on a witness' description of the culprits' garb and MO Moreover, Eric Bouthillette, who was on the front lines the whole night, reported that there were people dressed in provocateur-style gear at the head of the protest trying all night to start confrontations and being stopped by the rest of the protesters. At about 2:00 am the next morning, about 30 arrests were made. According to Eric, the protest ended with a conflict between the vandals/ provocateurs and the rest of the protesters. Some people were breaking windows and the mass of protesters were trying to stop them, which resulted in a conflict among the marchers themselves and not between the marchers and the police. Essentially, provocateurs or hooligans were trying to start trouble and the legitimate protesters tried to stop them, and people were arrested as a result of this scuffle. Is this a divide-and-conquer tactic being implemented? Isn't this easier than trying to contain thousands of people or bring on martial law? The protests continue and so far they have been taking place largely at night. The police seem to be concerned above all with protecting commercial establishments and preventing the protest from interfering with commerce. They would hate for the protesters to start marching during the day, but if this ...

Montreal Canadiens Pay Tribute to Gary Carter

To the Carter family from your friends in Montreal. We love you Gary. RIP For those that didn't understand the French portion here is the translation: Dear Fans, This Thursday we lost a true legend when the ex-catcher of the Montreal Expos, Gary Carter, died at the age of 57 after a courageous battle against cancer. Carter played in 11 all-star games during his 19 year Major League Baseball career. The first 11 of which he spent with Nos Amours (Expos nickname which means "Our Love") In 1986 he was a key element with the New York Mets when they surprised the Boston Red Sox in winning the World Series. He briefly wore the colors of the Giants and Dodgers before returning to us here in Montreal to complete his career in 1992 in a memorable way when he hit a double over the head of his former teammate Andre Dawson in the final at bat of his career. February 19, 2012 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. The Canadiens players wore number 8 Carter jerseys during the pregame skate. The jerseys will be auctioned off and the proceeds will be donated to the Gary Carter Foundation. The players are wearing the number 8 decal on the back of their helmets. Youppi (former Expos and current Canadiens mascot) is wearing his old Expos gear with the number 8 on the front. He later wears his Canadiens jersey with the number 8 also in front.
