Tour of the Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit (PRT), October 17, 2011. Morgantown won a PRT design contest in 1968 and received a large federal grant to complete the project. Despite being very popular with the students of the town, who depend on it to get to classes, the Morgantown PRT has been virtually ignored by the media in recent years, explaining why it is completely absent from the public discussion of how to create more mass transit to relieve our congested roadways.

This was a fantrip held on March 22 1986 on the onetime PRR/Conrail Pope's Creek line which runs from Bowie to the Potomac Edison (Pepco) Plant at Morgantown MD (the Pope's Creek section was pulled up a ways back). The primary function of this line is delivering coal to the Pepco plant, though it was designated a "main line" when it was built. But that's another story (in short-they used this "main line" as a "prop" to outsmart the B&O and get around the B&O's sole rights to enter DC). Again I wanted to include some of the ride as this is rare mileage for an Amtrak passenger train. We start at Baltimore's Penn Station (the camera was somehow running without my knowledge at the beginning, but good it was-there were place names announced for our train that haven't been announced since the 1940s-La Plata and Morgantown-listen for them). An electric loco brought the train up from DC but it's changed to a "classic" F40PH for the run to Morgantown. We depart the Penn Station area (heading south) and duck into the B&P (Baltimore & Potomac) Tunnel. After passing through southwest Baltimore neighborhoods (and pass the no-longer-existing Catonsville Branch) we start a high-speed run down the Northeast Corridor to Bowie where we're switched to the Pope's Creek line. This line is more historic than scenic as most of it follows the route John Wilkes Booth used after the Lincoln assassination. Along the way we pass through Waldorf and La Plata before finally arriving at the Pepco Plant <b>...</b>
