Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678 † 1741) Work: Motet "Nulla in mundo pax sincera" in E major, RV630 1. Aria: Nulla in mundo pax sincera, sine felle; pura et vera dulcis jesu est in te. Inter poenas et tormenta, vivit anima contenta, casti amoris, sola spe. Performed: Emma Kirkby (soprano) Dir: Cristopher Hogwood The Academy of Ancient Music Nulla in mundo pax sincera (RV 630) is a sacred motet composed by Antonio Vivaldi to an anonymous Latin text, the title of which may be translated as "In this world there is no honest peace". Written in the key of E major and in the typical lyrical Italian Baroque style, it is scored for solo soprano, two violins, viola and basso continuo, this would normally be a cello and keyboard instrument, in Vivaldi's case often the organ. The text dwells on the imperfections of a world full of evil and sin, and praises Jesus for the salvation he offers from it. The motet consists of three parts (Aria; Recitative; Aria), followed by a concluding Alleluia. A full performance of the piece takes approximately 13 minutes. The first aria of the piece was featured in the closing credits of the 1996 film Shine.

Early Motet 1. Trop sovent - Brunette - In seculum (double motet) Late 13th Century Continental Motet 2. J'ai mis - Je n'en puis - Puerum (Franconian motet) 0:41 Rogers Covey-Crump, John Potter (also organ), Paul Hillier The Franconian Motet The Franconian Motet was named after Franco of Cologne. These motets, composed around 1250-60, differed from the earlier Notre Dame motets in that they did not use the rhythmic modes, the triplum was more subdivided, and the multiple texts could also be in multiple languages. An example of a Franconian Motet is Amours mi font/En mai/Flos filius eius. Franco of Cologne (fl. mid-13th century) was a German music theorist and possibly composer. He was one of the most influential theorists of the late Medieval era, and was the first to propose an idea which was to transform musical notation permanently: that the duration of any note should be determined by its appearance on the page, and not from context alone. The result was Franconian notation.

JEAN-JOSEPH CASSANÉA DE MONDONVILLE (1711-1772) Grand Motet: Psalm 113 "In exitu Israël" 1. Marche et choeur "In exitu" 2. "Mare vidit" 3. "Jordanis conversus est restrorum" Performed by Les Arts Florissants Directed by William Christie *Jean-Joseph de Mondonville, also known as Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville, was a French violinist and composer. He was a younger contemporary of Jean-Philippe Rameau and enjoyed great success in his day. Pierre-Louis Daquin (son of the composer Louis Claude Daquin) claimed: "If I couldn't be Rameau, there's no one I would rather be than Mondonville. Mondonville was born in Narbonne in Southwest France to an aristocratic family which had fallen on hard times. In 1733 he moved to Paris where he gained the patronage of the king's mistress Madame de Pompadour and won several musical posts, including violinist for the Concert Spirituel. His first opus was a volume of violin sonatas, published in 1733. He became a violinist of the royal chapel and chamber and performed in some 100 concerts; some of his grands motets were also performed that year receiving considerable acclaim. He was appointed sous-maître in 1740 and then, in 1744, intendant of the Royal Chapel. He produced operas and grands motets for the Opéra and Concert spirituel respectively, and was associated with the Théatre des Petits-Cabinets, all the while maintaining his career as a violinist throughout the 1740s. One of the most prolific and versatile of 16th-century composers, Lassus wrote over 2000 works in almost every current genre, including masses, motets, psalms, hymns, responsorial Passions and secular pieces in Italian, French and German. Most of his masses are parody masses based on motets, chansons or madrigals by himself or others; the large number of Magnificats is unusual. His motets include didactic pieces, ceremonial works for special occasions, settings of classical texts (some secular, eg Prophetiae Sibyllarum, 1600), liturgical items (offertories, antiphons, psalms, eg Psalmi...poenitentiales, 1584) and private devotional pieces. He issued five large volumes of sacred music as Patrocinium musices (1573-6), and after his death his sons assembled another (Magnum opus musicum, 1604).

Nicolas Gombert (bc 1495; dc 1560) Flemish composer. Gombert was one of the leading composers of his generation, and one of the most technically advanced composers of polyphonic vocal music in Western history. Highly regarded by his contemporaries as a great innovator, he favoured dense textures and often used dark, rich timbres. He used pervading imitation more consistently than anyone of his own or an earlier generation, creating textures in which the voices tend to be equally important. Gombert was born in a village in Flanders, in the vicinity of Lille, now a part of France. He later became choir master to the most prestigious court in Europe, that of Emperor Charles V in Spain. His position allowed him to travel throughout the continent, together with the Imperial entourage. Contemporaries suggested that Gombert had been a student of Josquin Des Préz, but the details of this possible association are unknown. Gombert's compositions are entirely vocal, some for ensembles of up to twelve distinct voices. As opposed to his Italian contemporaries, who had begun work on a more animated and harmonically-oriented idiom, Gombert kept entirely within the domain of strict counterpoint and in fact seemed to hold the new musical developments of the time in low regard. His contrapuntal language is based on that of Josquin, but taken to the next level of complexity. A substantial volume of Gombert's compositions survive, including masses, a large number of motets, secular chansons ...

The Motet covers Tony Allen's "Afro Disco Beat"... Instrumental Dissent reflects much of the band's new, electronically textured explorations while still driving home hard hitting, percussive dance grooves. The album touches on many of the band's influences, from afro-beat to salsa, in addition to delving into new realms of house, break-beat, and down-tempo. Instrumental Dissent is a hypnotic creation which will have old Motet fans excited by the new direction of the band, and new fans captivated by the group's deliciously trancy throw down.

Pueri Concinite is a beautiful Christmas motet that touches the hearts of all who hear the soaring melody of the boy soprano. Like an angel, he proclaims the birth of God to the Virgin "as the Divine Mercy willed" while the children kneeling before the creche are encouraged to sing songs to the newborn king. The first composition by the name of "Pueri Concinite" was written by Jacob Handl, a devout Cistercian monk from the 16th century. Roughly three centuries later, set to the same lyrics, the Austrian Composer Johan Von Herbeck (1831-1877) composed a new version of this sacred motet that is used in this video. Sing together, children, sing songs to the newborn King; in pious tones, say: He who was born of Mary appears. Now we see fulfilled the word of Gabriel: Eya, eya! The Virgin has given birth to God, As the divine mercy willed. Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan have taken a short break from Bachs cantatas in order to record these Motets, remarkable for their expressiveness and beauty as well as for Bachs virtuoso choral writing. Rather than performing a cappella, Suzuki has included accompaniments from organ and different combinations of strings and wind instruments. But nevertheless it is the singers of the Bach Collegium Japan that stand in the limelight here and as followers of the Cantata series will already know, it is a marvellous choir, a choir to dream of (Diapason). Included on the disc are the six motets BWV 225-231, as well as BWV 118 O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht and BWV Anh. 159 Ich lasse dich
