Arts.21 | The Old Master -- International Star Armin Mueller-Stahl on Art and Life

Actor Armin Mueller-Stahl passed up a big role in Hollywood to play a character close to his heart in a German production. He preferred to star in the film adaptation of Thomas Mann's novel "Buddenbrooks", where he played the patriarch of the Luebeck merchant family, a man devoted solely to professional success. Armin Mueller-Stahl's own approach to life is very different. He writes, plays the violin, and has been happily married for 40 years. He has also won much acclaim with his drawings and paintings. At the opening of his exhibition at Gottdorf Castle, ARTS.21 spoke with the old master about art and life.

Ich bin die andere - Intro

The first 10 minutes from "I am the other woman" (2006). It contains two scenes I find the most beautiful from the whole film, and certainly two of the most important because of how they contrast against one another. The shot climbing up the dress at the beginning is almost surreal and has definite erotic connotations. There's various innuendo all over, in fact, the most obvious bits being the phallic cigarette. The use of mirrors throughout the movie is also important, for the doppelgänger theme, although it's hard to tell just by looking at these couple of scenes. As a film, it doesn't achieve much. It is psychologically shallow and thematically over done. But it's still a piece of beautiful mediocrity, and wonderfully acted. Jesus - The Movie (1999) - Part 1 of 12

JESUS - THE MOVIE (1999) - PART 1 of 12 Jesus (1999) is a Biblical telefilm that retells the story of Jesus. It was shot in Morocco and Malta. It stars Jeremy Sisto as Jesus, Jacqueline Bisset as Mary of Nazareth, Debra Messing as Mary Magdalene and Gary Oldman as Pontius Pilate. The film is notable for presenting a more human Jesus, compared to more solemn portrayals in earlier films; here Jesus laughs and cries much like anyone else. Among other things, he weeps at Joseph's funeral, throws stones in Lake Galilee when meeting Simon Peter and James son of Zebedee for the first time, dances at the wedding at Cana, and starts a water-splashing fight with his disciples at a well. Satan is portrayed as a man in modern dress (and as a woman in red, but the former guise is more prominent). During his temptation of Jesus, he shows him the Earth from the vantage point of space. Satan also shows Jesus images of wars and destruction carried out in his name. The film adds an apocryphal Roman historian named "Livio" who watches and comments as events unfold; he is presumably named after Livy. The movie's featured lead original soundtrack is "I Need You" by LeAnn Rimes. CAST INCLUDES: Jeremy Sisto -- Jesus Jacqueline Bisset -- Mary, mother of Jesus Armin Mueller-Stahl -- Joseph Debra Messing -- Mary Magdalene David O'Hara -- John the Baptist Gary Oldman -- Pontius Pilate Directed by Roger Young

Jesus - The Movie (1999) - Part 9 of 12

JESUS - THE MOVIE (1999) - PART 9 of 12 Jesus (1999) is a Biblical telefilm that retells the story of Jesus.
