Seven Styles of Overtone Singing (Tuvan Throat Singing)

Alexander Glenfield demonstrates seven styles of Tuvan throat singing, also known as "khoomei." The seven styles demonstrated here include: khoomei, sygyt, dag kargyraa, steppe kargyraa, ezenggileer, khoomei borbanggndyr and chylandyyk. Please note that the melodies, rhythms, and meters used in these examples deviate from the traditional styles of khoomei in Tuva.

Philippe Brunet, Trumpet. "So(u)l(e)." Improvisational Multiphonics.

Philippe "Eeps" Brunet. Improvisation on a single note. Please enjoy this tribute to drone music and minimalist "maximism" (inspired by the music of Phil Niblock). This improvisation was also inspired by my exploration of extended vocal techniques and ways of using the trumpet in unconventional ways to make "music" or Sound Art. I employ multi-phonics, voice sliding, Tuvan throat singing and circular breathing. I highly recommend listening to this on loud speakers or a good pair of headphones as the overtones in the recording may overload regular computer speakers. Please feel free to leave comments or questions below. Thanks for listening!

Pachelbel Tuba

This is my talent portion of last years Mu Phi Epsilon Music Man Pageant. Each of us had to wear dresses, answer questions, perform and talent, and really just act like crazies. This is my own "comical" rendition of Pachelbel's Cannon in D. At that time I had been listening to alot of the Youngblood Brass Band and I really dug the tuba in the group. He did super cool stuff with multiphonics (singing while playing). I started goofing around with it during marching season (hence the sousaphone...plus its just funnier). After watching the Pachelbel rant I got the idea for this arrangement. If ya can't hear all that well heres some info 1st Time - The cannon theme (in Bb) 2nd Time - Singing unison 3rd Time - Singing harmony 4th Time - A little falsetto action Final two times through the cannon theme I play the simple theme while singing the more intricate and flashy part. Then the ending I just tacked on. Enjoy!

"Amazing Grace" in Multiphonics with Tuba

What Happens when the California Band Directors Association locks us in a room full of instruments ALL NIGHT LONG? We do stupid stuff, that's what. Stuff like this! Conner Habib experiments with multiphonics by throat singing while playing the tuba to produce a very odd version of this classic song. Accompanied by Jason Cruz on the parade drum. 2/19/2010

Glick - Beth's Cornucopia world premiere

Beth's Cornucopia (2009) Andrew Glick ------------------- When I finished my undergraduate degree last year, my high school piano teacher, Andrew Glick, wrote Beth's Cornucopia as a graduation present. At its most basic, the theme is composed of four notes, E, F, G, and B — (0 1 3 7) in pitch set notation. The themes are constructed using transposition, inversion, reordering, and so on. While this is a serial composition technique, Glick focuses more on the structure of the piece than on equality of pitch. He utilizes a wide array of extended techniques—flutter tonguing (like rolling an "r" in Spanish), multiphonics (singing while playing), valve clicking, "speaking" through the instrument, etc.—to create variation and outline the structure. ------------------- Recorded live at New England Conservatory's Pierce Hall, Sunday, 7 Nov. 2010.

Fnugg

"Fnugg is the best new thing I have heard in years." Roger Bobo Fnugg is an improvisation with elements from the Australian Aboriginal instrument didgeridoo and Norwegian folk music. The techniques I use are multiphonics (to sing and play simultaneously) and my own invention "Lip Beat" (percussive tuba). The singing involves active use of syllables. Fnugg is a Norwegian word describing something very small and weightless. Like a snowflake.
Multiphonics with Canon

I was bored so I randomly decided to record myself playing Canon . I'm playing the bass line and singing the melody. This was the first take so it's not the best but it was for fun at the end of practice session.

Albert Mangelsdorff Trio. 1983.

Albert Mangelsdorff Trio. Albert Mangelsdorff described multiphonics, which he developed for trombone: "You play a note and sing another, usually a higher note. In the interval between overtones are created which become so audible that you end up with real chords-sometimes up to four notes...all that has to do with how far you can control your voce." Multiphonics under the pitch

Saxophone players generally do not flutter tongue, they usually vocally sing under the pitch they are playing to create a dirty kind of sound. This technique is possible on trombone, and is rarely used, and I think should be used more often.

This is less of a "how to" video than the title states, but essentially you play the lower note and sing the higher one. First I played through some harmonic intervals and then I played James Morrison's multiphonics intro.
