Haruki MURAKAMI: In SEARCH of this elusive WRITER (DOCUMENTARY)

Haruki Murakami (村上春樹, Murakami Haruki?, born January 12, 1949) is a Japanese writer and translator.[1] His works of fiction and non-fiction have garnered him critical acclaim and numerous awards. He is considered an important figure in postmodern literature. The Guardian praised him as "among the world's greatest living novelists" for his works and achievements.[2] Murakami was born in Japan during the post--World War II baby boom.[3] Although born in Kyoto, he spent his youth in Shukugawa (Nishinomiya), Ashiya and Kobe.[4][5] His father was the son of a Buddhist priest,[6] and his mother the daughter of an Osaka merchant.[7] Both taught Japanese literature.[8] Since childhood, Murakami has been heavily influenced by Western culture, particularly Western music and literature. He grew up reading a range of works by American writers, such as Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Brautigan, and he is often distinguished from other Japanese writers by his Western influences.[9] Murakami studied drama at Waseda University in Tokyo, where he met his wife, Yoko. His first job was at a record store, which is where one of his main characters, Toru Watanabe in Norwegian Wood, works. Shortly before finishing his studies, Murakami opened the coffeehouse (jazz bar, in the evening) "Peter Cat" in Kokubunji, Tokyo with his wife[10] (1974-1981).[11] Many of his novels have themes and titles that invoke classical music, such as the three books making up The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle: The Thieving ...

Takashi MURAKAMI ~~ Birth of SUPERFLAT

Superflat is a postmodern art movement founded by the artist Takashi Murakami, which is influenced by manga and anime. It is also the name of a 2001 art exhibition, curated by Murakami, that toured West Hollywood, Minneapolis and Seattle. In this short piece, Murakami explains about the SUPERFLAT concept and what he means by that. It has a lot to do with how he sees Japanese society today and how it has evolved since the end of the Pacific war in 1945 with the devastating attacks by the US using atomic weapons. A central influence on the concept of 'Superflat' is the Japanese cartoon culture of manga where enthusiasts are lured into a magical world that is divorced from reality. The insistent two-dimensionality of manga often results in an overall patterning of colors and shapes which provides a parallel space in which to escape from the pressures and expectations of society at large. All of the artists in 'Superflat' work between the established boundaries of their respective genres, for instance where fine art photography meets commercial photography, where painting meets illustration, or where fashion meets theatrical costuming.the 'supe'" in 'Superflat' not only emphasizes the planar qualities of much of the work, but also denotes a special, charged characteristic or attitude. With 'Superflat' Murakami suggests a broader definition of contemporary art in japan and the wide range of activity within the exhibition can be seen as a direct challenge to the traditional ...

1Q84 by Haruki Murakami (US book trailer)

"Murakami is like a magician who explains what he's doing as he performs the trick and still makes you believe he has supernatural powers . . . But while anyone can tell a story that resembles a dream, it's the rare artist, like this one, who can make us feel that we are dreaming it ourselves." —The New York Times Book Review The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo. A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver's enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 —"Q is for 'question mark.' A world that bears a question." Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled. As Aomame's and Tengo's narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector. A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell's—1Q84 is Haruki Murakami's most ...

Interview with Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami, artist and designer, founder of Kaikai-kiki: "I have a long relationship with design, a good example is my collaboration with Louis Vuitton. However this is the first time Ive made a public presentation at a design fair and Design Miami is a very good place to present my pieces but for me the background is the same. In the Western world there is a clear division between Art and Design but in Japan they are the same, it's part of Japanese philosophy."

Book review: 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami

Here is a closer look at Haruki Murakami's magnum opus 1Q84. For the English/American edition, in October 2011 Knopf will publish all 3 books in one big volume, the UK volume will come in 2 volumes. I use the Dutch edition (published by Atlas) for my review. Various details (but no real spoilers except for a very high level story outline) are in the review, suffice here to say that it's an intricate yet readable book that should appeal to all Murakami fans, and in general to everyone who wants to read something unique.

Exclusive Interview with Takashi Murakami at Versailles

www.vernissage.tv | Interview with Takashi Murakami 村上隆at the occasion of his exhibition at the Chateau de Versailles near Paris, France. Interview and video by Christophe Ecoffet. After Jeff Koons in 2008 and Xavier Veilhan in 2009, this year Takashi Murakami takes over the Château de Versailles. It's Takashi Murakami's first major retrospective in France. VernissageTV correspondent Christophe Ecoffet met the artist in the garden of the palace for an exclusive interview. On display in the 15 rooms of the Château and in the gardens are 22 major works, 11 of them have been created exclusively for this exhibition. According to the curator of the show, Laurent Le Bon, Murakami Versailles "is a walk, a trail throughout the "landscape area" of Versailles... The general public will be able to view and admire his creations, which are often technical masterpieces. The allegories and other myths of Versailles thus carry on a dialogue with the dreamlike creatures of Takashi Murakami, sometimes inspired by traditional Japanes art." Among the works presented to the public for the first time are the giant "Oval Buddha" on the Water Parterre in the garden, "Flower Matango" in the Hall of Mirrors, and "Yume Lion (The Dream Lion) in the Apollo Salon of the Château. Takashi Murakami was born in 1962 in Tokyo, Japan. He has a PhD in Nihonga painting from the Tokyo University of the Arts. Murakami has developed a signature style by combining the most modern techniques with traditional ...

BOOGIEZONE COMMUNITY CLASS JAPAN WEEK November 8, 2010 - November 13, 2010 Tuesday November 9, 2010 at Focus in Irvine, CA Ironically for Boogiezone's Japan week this past week, I choreographed a piece inspired by my trip to Japan last month. Although I visit my grandparents in a rural part of Japan every other year, this time around I really realized how much nature means to me and how much I appreciate it, as we live in a place with such high technology and so many people. The name of the prefecture my grandparents live is called Nagano, Japan (where the '98 Olympics were held). If anyone ever has the chance to go, its beautiful. Name of the song is: Umbrella Beach, by Owl City Choreography by: Yosuke Murakami (KM Legacy) Shout out to Aye Hasegawa and Sohey Sugihara for also representing for Japan week! Another shout out to Boogiezone Eutopia, Japan. Miss you Kanako! I want to thank Elm Pizarro for giving me the opportunity to teach. And everyone who came out and understood what I was trying to share with them. Thanks again for being a part of my first boogiezone class!
