On Saturday evening, in front of a sellout crowd of 18906 at PPL Park, the Union used a goal from Sébastien Le Toux and a second straight shutout performance from their defense to earn a critical 1-0 victory over the visiting Columbus Crew. With the result, the third-place Union (9-7-12, 39 points) move within two points of first-place Columbus (11-10-8, 41 points) with still a game in hand on them. To snap their eight-game winless streak -- the longest in franchise history -- the Union featured perhaps, one of their most unconventional lineups in franchise history. With veterans Justin Mapp (quad strain), Veljko Paunović (calf strain) and Faryd Mondragón (broken finger) all sidelined for Philly, Union manager Peter Nowak trotted out a starting 11 that averaged 23.55 years of age and featured seven players 23 or under. Among that group was 16-year-old Zach Pfeffer, who got the call to make his MLS debut in what was arguably one of the most important games in Union history. Morgan Langley, who was just signed this week, also made his MLS debut for the Union, coming on in the 80th minute to help preserve the win. Philly striker Sébastien Le Toux came through with a pair of goals as time was winding down to help the Union escape with one point and partly spoil an epic first-half performance from the Revs, who produced their highest-scoring output of the season. New England's stunning offensive surge was fueled by AJ Soares, Rajko Lekic, Moncef Zerka and Benny Feilhaber, all of whom netted first-half goals to help New England go into the halftime break with a commanding 4-1 lead. But the late-charging Union (8-7-11), who got a first-half goal from Roger Torres to stay alive, stormed back on the strength of Freddy Adu's first MLS goal since 2007 and the late heroics from Le Toux, who scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute and again in stoppage time after a deflection in the box. Led by a pair of goals from stalwart attacker Sebastien Le Toux -- both on penalty kicks -- the Union played FC Dallas to a 2-2 draw in an inter-conference battle between two of the league's top teams Saturday night.
