NASA's old research satellite is expected to come crashing down through the atmosphere Friday afternoon, Eastern Time. The spacecraft will not be passing over North America then, the space agency said in a statement Wednesday evening. The predictions should become more precise by Thursday afternoon and certainly by Friday."It is still too early to predict the time and location of re-entry with any more certainty," NASA said. An estimated 26 pieces -- representing 1200 pounds -- are expected to survive. Because water covers 70% of the Earth's surface, NASA believes that most, if not all of the surviving debris will land in water. Even if pieces strike dry land, there's very little risk any of it will hit people.The Aerospace Corporation in California, in fact, predicts that re-entry will occur over the Pacific late Friday afternoon, Eastern Time. The 20-year-old Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite will be the biggest NASA spacecraft to fall uncontrolled from the sky in 32 years. It is expected to break into more than 100 pieces as it enters the atmosphere, most of it burning up. The heaviest metal parts are expected to reach Earth, the biggest chunk weighing about 300 pounds. The debris could be scattered over an area about 500 miles long. So what do you think? Miami (CNN) -- Pieces of a defunct satellite that plummeted to Earth have come to rest, NASA said Saturday morning The space agency said the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite "is down," according to the space agency's Twitter page. NASA said debris fell to Earth between 11:23 pm ET Friday and 1:09 am ET Saturday, but it was not immediately clear where the pieces may have landed. About two dozen pieces of the satellite were expected to survive the crash through the Earth's atmosphere. Late Friday night, NASA predicted satellite parts would pass "over Canada and Africa, as well as vast areas of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans." "The risk to public safety is very remote," NASA said. The 26 pieces expected to survive the descent -- made of stainless steel, titanium and beryllium that won't burn -- ranged from about 10 pounds to hundreds of pounds, according to NASA. "The US is very safe from (the satellite) ... It's final orbit did not cross the United States," the space agency tweeted early Saturday. The satellite's orientation or configuration apparently has changed, and that is now slowing its descent. There is a low probability any debris that survives re-entry will land in the United States, but the possibility cannot be discounted because of this changing rate of descent. It is still too early to predict the time and location of re-entry with any certainty, but predictions will become more refined in the next 12 to 18 hours.
