Civilian deaths in Libya: Who's killing who?

The no-fly zone over Libya remains in force as NATO and former rebels back the new leadership's push into the few remaining Gadaffi enclaves. Alliance airstrikes reportedly hit residential buildings in the town of Sirte, but the countries that were quick to condemn attacks by the Colonel's troops back in March, seem to have gone silent. Civilian Deaths Growing Concern for NATO in Afghanistan

The Afghan government said Monday that a NATO airstrike that killed 27 civilians in southern Afghanistan was "unjustifiable." A massive NATO operation is underway around Marjah in that part of Afghanistan and allied officials said the airstrike targeted insurgents. As the fighting escalates in Afghanistan, civilians are increasingly caught in the crossfire. VOA's Laurel Bowman has more.

Tallying the Death Toll of NATO's Vicious War on Libyan Civilians

NATO's latest 90-day military mandate in Libya is set to run out on Friday. But the campaign to protect Libyan civilians has done little of that in Sirte, where thousands of innocent people are suffering as NATO forces besiege Gaddafi's hometown. National Transitional Council (NTC) fighters took full control of the airport in Sirte, Muammar Gaddafi's birthplace, on Thursday. NTC's forces first captured the city two weeks ago, but then lost control. Pro-Gaddafi forces have used sniper, rocket and artillery fire to fight NTC forces. The interim government's troops have warned they will mount pressure to push regime loyalists back toward the sea. NATO has not stayed out of the action. The town of Sirte is also under the alliance's aerial attack, and according to anti-war activist Sara Flounders, they actually play a key role there. "This is a NATO war where the so-called rebels are an auxiliary force that has been incapable of even taking any ground on their own," Flounders, from the anti-war group International Action Center, told RT. "This is overwhelmingly a war on civilians." And while another destructive fight is unfolding, both sides are blaming each other for endangering civilians, who are fleeing the city in large numbers. "Sirte is now without water, without food, without medical supplies, without operating hospitals," Flounders said. Libyan authorities have asked the United Nations for fuel for ambulances to evacuate the wounded. There have been reports that ...

Afghans Protest Against NATO Killing Civilians

Hundreds of Afghans took to the streets to protest against the killing of 10 civilians, mostly teenagers, in a raid by foreign forces, which heightened tensions between the Afghan government and NATO. KABUL The head of a presidential delegation investigating the deaths of 10 people in eastern Afghanistan concluded Wednesday that civilians — including schoolchildren — were killed in an attack involving foreign troops, disputing NATO reports that the dead were insurgents. Asadullah Wafa, a senior adviser to President Hamid Karzai, told The Associated Press by telephone that eight schoolchildren between the ages of 12 and 14 were among the dead discovered in a village house in the Narang district of Kunar province. A NATO official has said initial reports from troops involved in the fighting on Sunday indicated that those killed were insurgents — all young males. NATO Forces in Afghanistan Can't Deny They Killed Civilians in Sangin Anymore

bit.ly For weeks, US and allied forces in Afghanistan have denied they killed several dozen civilians in Sangin District of Helmand Province on July 23. But our new video exposes the truth about one of the worst civilian casualty incidents of the war. Watch our exclusive interviews with survivors and demand that your elected officials act to prevent future catastrophes like this. rethinkafghanistan.com First, NATO denied knowing anything about the incident. Then, they said only six people were killed and that most of them were insurgents. They can't deny it anymore. http Working with a brave team in Afghanistan headed by Anita, Brave New Foundation's Rethink Afghanistan project sent an intrepid local blogger into Sangin District of Helmand Province--one of the most dangerous areas of the country. He brought back extraordinary first-person accounts from survivors of the Sangin catastrophe. Thanks to his work, there's no doubt anymore: as many as 52 people were killed by a rocket fired by NATO forces. Survivors tell of a scene of absolute carnage and despair, and when the smoke cleared, according to one local, "They [NATO] did nothing and afterwards they said nothing, just like nothing ever happened." But something did happen, and we have to act. Evil NATO and NTC Fighters Attack Civilians Leaving Libya in Ruins With Thousands Killed or Wounded

Refugees from the Libyan coastal city of Sirte report that thousands have died as a result of relentless NATO bombardment and shelling by Western-backed "rebels." The three-week-old NATO siege of Sirte has left the city without adequate food, drinkable water, medicine and other basic necessities of life, creating hellish condition for its population of 100000. While the Benghazi-based National Transitional Council (NTC) has repeatedly issued announcements that the so-called rebels had advanced toward the city center under NATO air cover, they have again and again been forced to retreat under heavy fire from forces loyal to Col. Muammar Gaddafi, as well as what have been described as citizen volunteers. In their frustration, the anti-Gaddafi militias have pounded the coastal city with artillery and mortar rounds, tank shells and Grad rockets, wreaking horrific destruction. Thousands of refugees have tried to flee the city, forced to pass through checkpoints set up by the NATO-backed forces, where many have been taken prisoner, accused of being Gaddafi supporters. Reports from inside the city indicate a deepening humanitarian catastrophe. The aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF—Doctors Without Borders) reported that it had been in touch with doctors at the main hospital in Sirte, who were facing an increasingly impossible situation. NATO Bombs Killed More Civilians In Libya Than Government Fighting Against Domestic Terrorists

I wonder what Obama or Janet Reno with Clintons would do if domestic terrorists attacked police stations, army, federal governments buildings and robbed the central bank in the US? History: (Waco, Texas - 1993) The US Attorney General during Clinton administration Janet Reno approved the CS military gas attack that led to the deaths of over 80 men, women and children who had never been charged with any crime. Later Janet Reno stated that she "could not find anything wrong" with FBI actions in Waco despite overwhelming video based evidence that the FBI was responsible for the deaths of the Davidians. An aerial video tape shows a tank destroying a Davidian building while people were still inside. Autopsy reports indicate that six bodies found in the rubble of that religious sect building were crushed to death. Lizzie Phelan: 'NATO obviously killed civilians in Libya'

Sat Mar 3, 2012 - A UN commission investigating war crimes and human rights abuses in the Libya war has said that NATO airstrikes on the North African country in 2011 killed scores of civilians. Press TV has interviewed Lizzie Phelan, in London, on the issue. Press TV: You have reported the news several times from Libya. With regards to that, we see that the war crimes that were committed by NATO during the Libyan war have been quite ignored and they seem to have been ignored until today. What is preventing a proper investigation and follow up process on what really happened in Libya? Phelan: NATO went into Libya under a mandate supposedly to protect civilians. But obviously when I was there for quite a long time during the 8- to 9-months NATO bombardment of Libya, everyday civilians were being killed by NATO as the report correctly says. I visited a school that was bombed, the University in Tripoli, people's homes, every single day civilians were dying at the hands of NATO and there was only one incident, I believe it was in June, in which I think 15 people in Tripoli were killed by a NATO airstrike that NATO actually admitted responsibility for. The rest of the time, they claimed that civilian targets were legitimate military targets, without producing evidence. During the whole time, the former Libyan government was calling for independent international observers to come in and to verify what was happening on the ground, but those calls were repeatedly ignored and so ...

NATO Forced to Admit Air Strikes Killed Libyan Civilians, Contradicting Initial Denials

DemocracyNow.org - NATO has admitted for the first time Libyan civilians were killed and injured during its seven-month bombing campaign that led to the ouster and death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. The acknowledgement came after a New York Times investigation revealed at least 40 civilians, and perhaps more than 70, were killed by NATO air strikes, including at least 29 women or children. Others were killed when NATO warplanes bombed ambulance crews and civilians who were attempting to aid the wounded injured in earlier strikes. Democracy Now! speaks to New York Times senior reporter Eric Schmitt, who co-wrote the investigation with CJ Chivers. "We only saw a small sampling of the strike sites that may have been affected. So the death toll is probably much larger," Chivers says. Tripoli claims 15 civilians killed in NATO airstrike — RT.

In Libya, another deadly NATO bombing has reportedly killed at least 15 civilians in the capital Tripoli. NATO insists it hit a command center, but Libyan officials say three children are among the dead. It comes just a day after the alliance admitted killing up to nine civilians in another airstrike, which it blamed on a technical failure. A large private compound to the west of the capital has been reduced to rubble in the latest apparent airstrike. Rescuers have discovered the remains of 15 people, accordion to Libyan officials. The house destroyed belonged to General Khoweildi al-Hamidi, one of the people closest to Colonel Gaddafi. He was among those who took part in the military coup to bring the Libyan leader to power 41 years ago. The general escaped injury, but most of his family died in the attack. "If you saw him yesterday, you would not believe," a man, crying, told RT. He was talking about one of the grandchildren of the general and one of three kids who were killed in the incident. The day of the bombing, the family had gathered with friends to celebrate his 4th birthday. "Libyan civilian families were attacked in the early hours of this morning, killing 15 people, including children, fathers, mothers, uncles and aunts," said Moussa Ibrahim, a spokesman for the Libyan government. NATO has denied these claims, just as it has never admitted the deaths of more than 800 others the Libyan government says were killed by their bombs. The nine people killed in ...

Libya Shattered As Per NATO Plan; Gaddafi's Family Seeks Justice at the Hague

Relatives of the slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi are reportedly looking to The Hague with a 'war crimes' lawsuit against NATO. They accuse the Alliance of deliberately targeting Gaddafi's convoy, which they say posed no threat to civilians. NATO was only allowed into Libya by the UN solely to protect citizens. Meanwhile, the military alliance has postponed its preliminary decision to end its Libya mission by the end of this month, following calls from the interim government to stay on.

'NATO has said that it will take care to avoid civilian casualties, but they don't follow through.'" Among the dead were a 3-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl.

'Gaddafi son knows too much, will be silenced'

Muammar Gaddafi's fugitive spy chief, one of the last key figures from Libya's old regime still on the run, has been captured in the country's south. It comes just days after Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam was also caught. The National Transitional Council has since said it won't hand him over to the Hague Tirbunal. Instead it's vowed to try him at home for crimes against the Libyan people, that could result in the death penalty. Muammar Gaddafi's most influential son was also seized in the south of the country on Saturday along with his aides as they tried to escape to neighbouring Niger. Following the toppling of his father at the end of an 8-month civil war, many questions about the regime remain. Saif is believed to be one of the few who could answer them. Political analyst and author Adrian Salbuchi says Saif al-Islam will be silenced by either the Hague or the National Transitional Council. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com
